Clinton's on 'Between Two Ferns' Breaks Records". viewed more than 30 million times first 24 hours

Hillary Clinton's appearance on Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis is a bona fide hit.

The video, in which Clinton withstands a series of awkward and often insulting questions from Galifianakis' wacky talk show host, broke Funny or Die records after it appeared online on Sept. 22. The video was viewed more than 30 million times in its first 24 hours, the highest first-day viewership in Funny or Die history.

It had been nearly two years since the last episode of Between Two Ferns — an October 2014 clip with Brad Pitt — when the video went live on Wednesday at 5 a.m. PT. Within hours it was trending on Facebook and Twitter. It became the most socialed Funny or Die clip — with 500,000 Facebook shares and 25,000 retweets — in its first day.

...I think it might give a lot of viewers, even staunch Hillary voters, something of an epiphany. In the back of my mind I knew this, but watching this little video brought it home that most people expect a certain type of humor from their president, the one they've been seeing from Obama for eight years, and that they saw from Bill Clinton for his eight. Languid and joking with friends. And it's perfectly understandable that this is what we are used to. Also that if we don't see it in Hillary, we may feel a disconnect.

But Hillary's humor is far more deadpan. If you key into that...well, it's like those pictures that stop being one thing and become something else. "Oh...I get it..." This video, IMHO and remarkably enough, gets that through to the viewer. All you see is Hillary, and the comparing goes away, the disconnect goes away, and you "get it." What kind of president she's going to be, including her humor.

I'm very glad she did this. And I'm thrilled that so many thousands are watching it. I don't know if it will change minds, but I think it will make those who've reluctantly decided to vote for her more enthusiastic and happy with her. And they probably won't even realize why

This shows so much of her responsible demeanor. I am amazed by her ability to maneuver this. I respect her sense of respect for the interviewer and her sense of self. She is well suited to be in the position to evaluate her surroundings.

Zach is brilliant and courageous.

The schtick is that it's fake and Zach is intentionally coming off as shallow and annoying. President Obama did a similar appearance a few years ago.

That being said, her acting/improv skills are not bad at all.

a while longer for more filming. The style of response she adopted is the show's style. She knew she wouldn't be walking up with a big candidate smile and handshake, so she probably wasn't that surprised to learn the intro would be her guards attacking her host instead.

Behind the Making of Hillary Clinton’s ‘Between Two Ferns’

Q: It's interesting how each person has a different way in which they react to Zach. Some are disgusted. Obama was mean. Hillary was sort of dismissive and incredulous. Did they come out in the shooting? Did she come with it?

A: Yeah, she knew what Between Two Ferns was and what's expected of a guest: to sit here and be roasted. It's interesting because we have such a good time shooting it, you wish you could put out a separate video where it shows us having a great time. But these are all about hitting a certain vibe and she was really good about slipping into that.

Q. What was the vetting process like for the questions?

A. I don't know if it was because of the short timetable or because when you're in the middle of a campaign there's an infinite amount of more important things than making this video, but it actually was not much of a vetting process. When we do these we prefer to do them with a lot of improvisation, where the interviewee doesn't know what the questions are beforehand, so the campaign was pretty cool about that. In this one, actually, the majority of it was improvised.
