2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOne problem with the debates...
It is assumed that the winner of the debates, the candidate with the most knowledgeable and intelligent answers, will attract new voters.
Normally this is the case but if someone is considering voting for Trump they've already decided that knowledge and intelligence are irrelevant for the presidency. They must think that bluster and self aggrandizement to be the most essential qualities.
In the debates we all expect Hillary to be the most knowledgeable and intelligent and Trump to bluster and stroke his own ego therefore it's unlikely that the debates will affect the election in any substantial way.

(52,253 posts)so it will only pay attention to the bullying and the bragging and the zingers.
you're right, hillary can't improve her standing simply by showing off her eminent qualifications, rational thought process, and empathy for americans. she has to, metaphorically, pop the bully in the nose.

(28,795 posts)set it up to put the repub in the most salubrious position by setting the bar low, lower, lowest for the pub?
Bush I, Dole, Bush II both times, McCain, Romney, were all considered underdogs, and merely not vomiting all over themselves would render them the winners
and the aftermath of many of them, particularly that infamous orange Gore debate, actually claimed that the pub candidate did a better job.
wait til you see what the Fools for Scandal do with Trump's sure do be despicable performance
just ask Matt Lauer how he thinks Trump will do/has done

(6,286 posts)But the verbiage is almost the same. Funny how people think alike, even those who don't know each other.

(1,016 posts)Unfortunately his supporters believe in the same nonsense. Trump knows his base very well and he plays to their biases and ignorance. But normal people will abhor his ignorance and basis.

(7,004 posts)Of course it's going to be a challenge. Debating crazy is worse than debating stupid.

(11,495 posts)Actually answer questions in detail instead of giving the old "I have a plan, you will see, it's great", yet never give any details at all about those plans. If he is allowed to get away with his usual BS, I hope Hillary confronts him and pushes him for real answers.

(47,209 posts)The effect is cumulative and unforgivable. I think the press maybe got the memo that there is no excuse for that shit. I hope so, anyway.
reflection
(6,286 posts)is that the bar is set so god awfully low for Trump that if he manages to show up and not throw up all over his chest it will be tallied as a win for him and the fence sitters might fall his way.
I do hope that if he starts yelling and interrupting that Hillary says something to the effect of "wait your turn and use your inside voice, Donald." I think if Hillary speaks to him as an inferior without taking cheap shots he's liable to freak out, as it is clear he does not like being corrected by women.

(70,127 posts)to feel better about voting for her. have had this conversation w a couple of berners. i think a strong performance, just the shocking comparison, side by side, will soothe a lot of consciences.

(28,795 posts)this time, above all others (except, maybe 04, when everyone already knew what a disaster incumbent President Cheney was), how can any rational person even consider voting for a true madman with a demonstrably authoritarian worldview?
And president Pence will be even worse than Cheney was
mopinko
(70,127 posts)yeah, it is tiring. especially after obama.
i firmly believe that, even if there are some things i dont think hillary will deliver, she will be a great president who will bring real change for the better.
no doubt drumph represents change, but it can only be change for the worse.

also, look for an extended filibuster of whatever SCOTUS appointee appears on the horizon
it would be nice if what you hope for happened, but I just don't see it. outside the urban areas, it's all Deliveranceville
