New York (CNN) Hillary Clinton is visiting only two battleground states this week -- hardly a sign of confidence at her standing 49 days before the election, but an acknowledgement that one task reigns above all: Preparing for her first face-to-face confrontation with Donald Trump.
While she is set to make a quick trip to Florida on Wednesday, after dipping into Pennsylvania on Monday, Clinton will devote the lion's share of her time huddling with her debate team, gaming out how she will confront Trump next Monday night at Hofstra University.
Clinton, who has participated in more debates than any presidential candidate in recent history, faces a new challenge with Trump. She is preparing for Trump to confront her on a litany of uncomfortable subjects, ranging from her email scandal to Bill Clinton's infidelity to her health.
Trump showed he was willing to go there Tuesday when he tweeted, "Hillary Clinton is taking the day off again, she needs the rest. Sleep well Hillary - see you at the debate!"
Clinton, in a radio interview Tuesday, said she was ready to deal with Trump's attacks.
"I am going to do my very best to communicate as clearly and fearlessly as I can in the face of the insults and the attacks and the bullying and the bigotry that we have seen coming from my opponent," Clinton said Tuesday on the Steve Harvey Radio show. "I can take it, Steve. I can take that kind of stuff. I have been at this, I understand it is a contact sport."
To knock Trump off his game, people advising Clinton have been looking for a one-line retort that will be a memorable moment from the contest.

Considering that the first debate will be seen by more people than practically any TV show this year and probably be the highest rated presidential debate in history I'm all for HRC taking the time to rest and prepare--a good performance in this debate could give her the boost to really overtake Trump.

(50,451 posts)doesn't rattle easily unlike trump who over reacts to the smallest thing. I suspect the trump campaign is the one that is concerned about how their candidate will do and so they should be.

(1,132 posts)She will squash Trump in the debates. Hell, Trump will squash himself, in front of 100 million people. He doesn't know the issues, his answers are little more than word salad gibberish, and he lies constantly. And unlike the spineless Matt Lauer, HRC WILL factcheck his bloated ass if he repeats falsehoods like "I was against the Iraq War" or "Hillary started the birther movement".
This will be a bloodbath. No question.

I think a healthy diet, moderate exercise, and adequate sleep will go a long way in a situation like this.

(8,928 posts)that won't include any kind of plan or answer to how he will do anything he says he will. How it goes from there nobody really knows because then it becomes a function of:
- How the moderator controls, or doesn't control the debate interaction; i.e., will Trump be allowed to interrupt and drown out Hillary while she is trying to answer
- The nature of the questions to each candidate; i.e., hard balls for Hillary and soft balls for Trump
- How much he is held accountable for answering the actual questions and called out for deflecting
- And of course there will be the media spin about "who won" afterward. He will be a complete buffoon and the Trump and Republican surrogates will still claim he won - no different than we have seen all along.
Personally I really have no good reason to expect the debates to be fair to Hillary because the media wants it to stay a close race until the end and maximize their advertising revenue and profit. And I hope I'm wrong and the media suddenly get a moral backbone.
