Amazingly, Before He Died Ted Kennedy Tutored Democrats on How to Beat Romney
According to Paul Begala, before he passed away in 2008, Ted Kennedy gave him a tutorial on how to defeat Mitt Romney. Obama and the Dems followed Kennedys advice, and won.
On the second page of a story for Newsweek, Paul Begala wrote about a tutorial Ted Kennedy gave him on how to beat Romney before he died,
Our goal was to take Romneys greatest strengthhis business recordand make it a weakness. We were given a road map by none other than the late, great Ted Kennedy. As the 2008 election was approaching, I paid the senator a visit. I thought Romney might be the GOP nominee, and Kennedy gave me a tutorial on how to beat him. Dont underestimate Romney, Kennedy said. Hes smart and resourceful and will say anything, take any position. Kennedy recounted how his campaign team tracked down employees of companies that had been shut down after being bought by Bain Capital. Shamelessly copying Kennedys plan, we interviewed dozens of laid-off middle-class working people. Their stories were emblematic of the collapse of the middle class: factories closed, health benefits canceled, lives ruined.
My old friend, former Georgia governor and senator Zell Miller, taught me that a hit dog barks, but Romney remained silent. I am still amazed that Romney did not respond. He allowed our little, underfunded super PAC to define him as Gordon Gekko. Without his business record, Romney was left with nothing but his charm.

That may describe the Mitt Romney who Kennedy used to lock horns with. But the Romney I saw during this campaign came across as clueless when he should have been smart, reckless when he should have been resourceful, and as a result, embarrassingly predictable:
I'm not saying that Kennedy's advice didn't help -- just that Romney's behavior helped even more. Either he got a lot of really bad advice (divine or otherwise), or he got good advice that he didn't want to listen to.

(41,832 posts)but the article makes it seems like that was the only reason Mitt the Twit lost.
He lost because:
1. Obama and the Obama campaign
2. the Republican platform - ditch Medicare/Medicaid, immigration etc
3. The lies caught up with him
4. good ads that defined Mitt early - I put this in 4th place.
5. Mitt is just kind of creepy

(408 posts)Strange comment. Anyway what I find interesting is Teddy's remark that "Hes smart and resourceful and will say anything, take any position," because that's exactly what Romney did in the first debate, which gave the media license to declare the race a tie, even though it wasn't. All it took many good minds to slay this year's GOP dragon and Teddy's was one of them.

(1,201 posts)Not to be a jerk, but it was August of 2009. Man, I wish he had been around for the 2012 election.
Hey, if John Kerry steps down to become Secretary of State, would Duvall Patrick appoint a Kennedy as the new Senator for Massachusetts? It would be a great fuck you to Scott "I'm really a moderate" Brown and it would drive the GOP CRAZY!

(36,974 posts)Senator-elect Elizabeth Warren is taking Brown's seat which was Teddy Kennedy's seat.
I think if Deval appointed a Kennedy to Kerry's seat it would NOT make the GOPers heads explode.
I do not think that there are any Kennedy's ready to be a U.S. Senator yet.
Robert F. Kennedy III just won a U.S. House seat the other night for the first time.
And Patrick Kennedy wants to be out of politics for a bit.
So, who else is there from the Kennedy family? Perhaps Joe P. Kennedy II ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Patrick_Kennedy_II
