Rick Scott On Decision Not To Extend Early Voting: 'The Right Thing Happened'

Well, of course. The more difficult it is for you to vote, the happier Republicans are.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) is standing by his decision not to extend early voting hours, despite the fact that some voters said they waited as long as nine hours to cast a ballot.

"Well I'm very comfortable that the right thing happened," he told WKMG Orlando while speaking with reporters on Thursday night. "We had 4.4 million people vote."

The WXMG reporter tried to follow up again and ask whether hours should have been extended, but a member of Scott's staff appeared to end the press conference. When Scott was asked again while walking with reporters, he repeated his answer.

A major reason for Florida's chaotic early voting process was that last year, the state's GOP-controlled legislature shortened early voting days from 14 to eight. Long lines were reported across the state, with one polling place closing as late as 1 a.m. Sunday morning. In a sudden move, the Miami-Dade elections department allowed voters to cast in-person absentee ballots on Sunday afternoon, but closed temporarily because it could not meet demand.

I'm just fed up with people trotting out Crist every time the next contest for governor comes up. The ONLY reason Crist is no longer a Republican is that it is in his best political interest for the moment. If the Republican Party moderated just a little, Crist would have an "R" behind his name again in a heartbeat.

Crist was the chosen successor to Jeb Bush and continued Jeb's policies. This is NOT a reason for DEMOCRATS to suggest him as a candidate deserving our support.

10. Party switchers govern a lot differently then before switching

Look at Arlen Specter, he went from the most moderate republican to having a 98% party line voting record with democrats after he switched. And he wasn't a problem during the healthcare debate.

I don't live in FL, so I leave it up to FL dems to find someone who can beat a corrupt bastard like Rick Scott. But I'd rather have a moderate democrat running the state then a corrupt guy who got the biggest fine ever for medicare fraud and who's trying to personally enrich himself as governor with crap like drug testing for the poor.

12. Crist did not switch to the Democratic Party - he's an Independent

He's hedging his bets, hoping the Republican Party will swing back to sanity.

I might feel more charitable towards Crist if he had actually made the commitment to become a Democrat, but he did not.

I have lots of friends that work and worked in the state government before Jeb, during Jeb, and during Crist. Jeb made it bad, Crist didn't change that. The environment for state workers was poisonous all the way through the Bush and Crist tenures. The local Democratic groups were decimated - state workers couldn't take the chance that their supervisors might find out that they were Democrats or they could be fired at will. Previously, Florida had strong protections for state workers - they had to commit a felony before they could be fired. Jeb removed all those protections and made hiring partisan.

Scott has made it worse - most of the people I know have left government jobs if possible or have been forced out. The few that have stayed are keeping their heads low, waiting for retirement or a change of government. Many will no longer talk to me - they know I am an active Democrat and they worry they will get fired just for associating with me!

With all the antipathy here against Jeb Bush, I cannot understand the fondness for Crist. Crist still remains a Jeb Bush follower even if he is not currently in the same party as his hero.

I will donate money, work for him, etc. Rick Scott is an evil motherfucker. He needs to be gone from Florida and politics. Crist, even though was a Republican, was not a Teabagging Jesus Christer politician. He was a decent man and cared about Florida.
