GOP ad asking Trump to keep his word and quit (National Ad Campaign)

Free the Delegates is an American political effort within the Republican Party, formed in June 2016 by delegates to the 2016 Republican National Convention with the goal of nominating a candidate other than Donald Trump, who won a plurality of primary votes and pledged delegates to be nominated. - Wikipedia

Barring a lightning strike, this is purely symbolic.

After this week, too many deadlines will have passed
to get a replacement candidate on the ballot in enough
states for a reasonable chance to get 270 electoral votes.

It's not going to happen.

if he drops out, they can replace him with anyone they choose, and if people choose Trump on the ballot, those votes can be allotted to the new candidate since it's the electoral college that chooses our president, not the people. Basically, if he died or became brain dead for realz, they'd do the same thing.

about what happens if a candidate appears after the deadline for getting their name on the ballot. For example, some states would simply give any votes for Trump to his replacement; other states say votes for Trump count as votes for Trump even if he is no longer in the race.

Of course it could get REALLY ugly if Trump drops out, the Republicans replace him with someone and between all the candidates no one gets the magic number of EC votes. Then the House gets to basically choose our next Republican President, even if Hillary wins the popular vote in a landslide.

of whether the candidate is or is not on the ballot of any particular state. I guess this is why

Over the years, however, despite legal oversight, a number of electors have violated their state’s law binding them to their pledged vote. However, these violators often only face being charged with a misdemeanor or a small fine, usually $1,000. Many constitutional scholars agree that electors remain free agents despite state laws and that, if challenged, such laws would be ruled unconstitutional. Therefore, electors can decline to cast their vote for a specific candidate (the one that wins the popular vote of their state), either voting for an alternative candidate, or abstaining completely. In fact, in the 2000 election, Barbara Lett-Simmons, an elector for the District of Columbia, cast a blank ballot for president and vice president in protest of the District’s unfair voting rights. Indeed, when it comes down to it, electors are ultimately free to vote for whom they personally prefer, despite the general public's desire.

He's a true republican and represents those republicans around me perfectly.

Remember, it's their way or the highway. Has been increasingly over each successive decade.

If the GOP has buyer's remorse, too bad. This is where they've gone and this is now who they are.
