2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMSNBC reported Rump is not prepping for the debates.
If true, this indicates, to me, that he's going to back out of them. The ignorant little bully knows he's no match for Hillary's brilliance.

He will come out with some toxic zingers against HRC and the moderators. He will employ logical fallacies and not answer the questions posed to him. He will give responses to questions he chooses. He will insult and attack. He will attempt to make the debates about himself. He will call for his followers to work against any administration but his.

(36,926 posts)She will deliver them in a calm and measured way, but they will be the kind of remarks guaranteed to send Mr. Rump into a total meltdown. I really, really hope these debates take place, because I DO expect to be royally entertained by Mr. Tiny Whatever!

(10,857 posts)At this point I'm convinced that Trump's actual objective is to generate interest and funding in the next evolution of his media career. It's highly unlikely that he can or even wants to connect with informed voters.
What he wants is to secure the funding-conduit of our least informed voters, trying to use the Backfire Effect by goading Mrs. Clinton into correcting his bullshit (that makes conservative voters believe the lies all the more fervently).
The way to beating that tactic was shown by President Obama in the last Presidential debates against Mitt Romney. Romney tried all night to infuriate the President, but instead he stuck to his own policy and his own knowledge of the subjects. I expect Mrs. Clinton to do the same, and I expect some percentage of viewers to go completely apoplectic over her refusal to call Trump out.
Unfortunately, being boring, informed, and Presidential is the way to win the Presidency. So unless Mrs. Clinton decides she can overcome a wave of enthusiasm for Trump that will be generated by her taking him on directly, she'll take a comparatively un-entertaining path through the debates.

(49,001 posts)He thinks he can win by dominating the news cycle by saying outrageous stuff. Though that worked in the Primaries, it has less effectiveness in the general election, though it still has some.
Hillary needs to be (and surely will be) calm and let him spew. Then she can dig the knife in for a few select but deep cuts. If she can plant irritants under his thin skin and get him to rant out of control, it'd be great!

(15,951 posts)Donald Trump is taking a different approach. He summons his informal band of counselors including former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, talk-radio host Laura Ingraham and ousted Fox News Channel chairman Roger Ailes to his New Jersey golf course for Sunday chats. Over bacon cheeseburgers, hot dogs and glasses of Coca-Cola, they test out zingers and chew over ways to refine the Republican nominees pitch.

(11,631 posts)I expect Trump to simply spew so much complete bullshit that HRC can't possibly respond to the ridiculousness of it all and it will be difficult for her to stay on track and speak about policy or anything resembling reality. She's, of course, tremendously more knowledgeable and discussing policy in detail is her strength. This is why Trump will try to simply turn it into a shoving match and unfortunately half the country will ignore the fact checkers the next day when they say that 95% of what he said was complete BS.

(34,136 posts)Two minutes for the first response, then a short time for discussion after.
The debate will be divided into six time segments of approximately 15 minutes each on major topics to be selected by the moderator and announced at least one week before the debate.
The moderator will open each segment with a question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. Candidates will then have an opportunity to respond to each other. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a deeper discussion of the topic.
Vice presidential debate (October 4, 2016, Longwood University, Farmville, VA)
The debate will be divided into nine time segments of approximately 10 minutes each. The moderator will ask an opening question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a deeper discussion of the topic.
Second presidential debate (October 9, 2016, Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis, MO)
The second presidential debate will take the form of a town meeting, in which half of the questions will be posed directly by citizen participants and the other half will be posed by the moderator based on topics of broad public interest as reflected in social media and other sources. The candidates will have two minutes to respond and there will be an additional minute for the moderator to facilitate further discussion. The town meeting participants will be uncommitted voters selected by the Gallup Organization.
Third presidential debate (October 19, 2016, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV)
The format for the debate will be identical to the first presidential debate.

(19,066 posts)Hillary will be ready. I am sure she is having mock debates where her opponent yells over her and calls her names. I'm sure she's also preparing for an antagonistic moderator.
When you look at Hillary's campaign you see the most prepared campaign I have ever seen. They are usually controlling the narrative and they always anticipate what's next.
Hillary's got this. She and her campaign are prepared for anything Donald will throw at her in the debates or on the trail or in the media. They are leaving nothing to chance.

(11,489 posts)He won't back out. He'll just be Trump and answer questions with insults, hyperbole, and completely fact-free. He has no actual policy positions and doesn't care if he says something 180 degrees different than what he said 15 seconds ago because nobody calls him on it and his followers don't care.
And then the TV stations will post an online poll asking who won and Republican die-hards will flood the polls and the networks will declare him the winner.

"Conway isnt the only person in her family who has worked to take down the Clintons. Her husband, George T. Conway III, a lawyer at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, was behind some of the most bitter lawsuits against Bill Clinton in the 1990s and stories that were promoted via the Drudge Report."

(128,988 posts)for the carnival barker. He'll be there. He's a ratings juggernaut so expect softball questions along with questions that will push his buttons to go off-script and give the networks one hell of a performance and audience boost. He doesn't read, he only watches TV, he knows more than anyone, and he really doesn't like anyone telling him what to do or what to day. Unless it is his idea, it is not as good as what he would concoct.
That means he will wing it. He will attack, attack some more, ignore the question, and attack again.
