I often learn something.

Today I learned that in his Iowa speech, he included a number of attacks on President Obama that were NOT included in the written text that has been published since.

So he stood there speaking to his almost all-white audience, attacking Obama while also pretending to care about African Americans. No one who only reads the text will know that it doesn't match the speech he actually gave.

For example, he spent some time talking about the "incompetent Obama/Clinton administration" -- which never made it into the text. African Americans who HEARD the speech would have had a different reaction to it than ones who only read the speech.

Even for someone who is not a strong fan of Hillary Clinton, the whole notion of "looking Presidential" is bullshit.

Just think back to every other election you might remember. Did you (and this is a hypothetical question) vote for the candidate you thought looked more Presidential? I bet you voted either for the one in your preferred political party, or for the one (regardless of party) you sincerely though was the better candidate.

Doctors got a lot of attention from theories that women's hormones made them too temperamental to be trusted with the Office.

That's when Trump formed his opinions and they've clearly never changed.

that pointed out men's hormones cycled on a vastly faster cycle than women's. As in, men went through in about 24 hours what women went through in a month. So, who exactly is the more stable gender?

They probably couldn't find Germany on a map to begin with, and I can only imagine how well Trump succeeded (or not) in pronouncing her name correctly. I live in Germany now, and the Germans laugh themselves silly listening to Americans pronouncing her name wrong (the first syllable rhymes with "fair" and not "fur&quot . Of course, two syllables in one word is probably a lot for many Trump supporters to handle in the first place-

was mostly a media thing and not something that her political opponent (Social Democrats) did? I mainly remember the (yellow) press always making fun of the way she looks but that changed before that first election she won. A journalist talked about it years ago that the people didn't want to see this negative reporting about Merkel anymore so the media had to adjust. People in the comedy business also felt that change that people got tired of the Merkel jokes.
But yes, Merkel was another example of the double standard against women in politics but I think she was lucky that the people got fed up with it.

The Social Democrats had some very capable women in their own ranks, and the good old boys, (Schröder, Gabriel, etc.) made sure they never rose beyond a few insignificant cabinet positions. Most of the German media knew better. Ingrid Matthäus-Meier of the SPD was frequently interviewed in German TV news not because of her gender, but because she was one of the few SPD people who talked straight and concisely when asked a question. I only met her once, but she was in jeans in a train on the way back to Bonn from some conference in Brussels, and she was definitely the brightest star in their sky for a while--not that it did her career any good. My wife was a reliable SPD voter for decades, and just gave up for exactly this reason. The SPD had become a stagnant old boys' club--literally. This is not the German media's fault. They played along for a while, but Schröder's antics--both as Chancellor and afterward--just got too outrageous to ignore. One of the biggest cult pop hits of 15 years ago (more or less) was an "oom-pah" march put together from a clip of Schröder whining over an open microphone "someone get me a bottle of beer, or I'm going on strike, and not writing anything any more."

Merkel rose to the candidacy of the CDU in spite of, and not because of the fact that the CDU was also lacking in star power at the top. The men near the top of the CDU figured she'd have enough after one term, and they could put one of their own old boys' club in the chancellor's position. Oops. Merkel may LOOK like you mom's third grade teacher, but she's smart, does her homework, and knows the ways of life in parliament. Now look at them. They have exactly zero men who present a competent personality worth presenting to the German public successor. They thought they'd extinguish the career of Ursula Von Der Leyen by making her defense minister, but she took to her new position with just as much energy as she did her old cabinet post of Family Minister, and she is now the one most talked about as Merkel's successor as the CDU's next candidate for Chancellor. NONE of the other parties are offering a credible alternative at this point. It should be pointed out that the German CDU is NOT their equivalent to our Republicans. The closest thing the Germans have to our Republicans these days is the NPD, who, for the most part, are somewhere between shunned and banned at this point.

The comedy people in Germany have given up on Merkel by now because they realize that the joke was on them. The Germans chose competence over gender stereotypes. It stood to reason that we'd catch up eventually.

Things are just too bizarre, I don't want to pay much attention to his campaign.

Of course, it is not "looks" which matter. Not surprised he said it though. About all he has left. Sooner or later, he had to get around to, "But we have never had a woman as President before, therefore we can't have that!" And since at least a portion of the anti-Hillary vote is exactly because of that, Trump may actually gain a few votes back with this pitch.
