Related: About this forumNew RW Meme: Hillary would be getting crushed by any R besides Trump
Heard it from the RW bloviators on MSGOP yesterday. Went unchallenged by host Chris Hayes.
They're laying the groundwork for their continuing obstruction of any D POTUS. Hillary is horrible. She'd lose to Ben Carson if he was the nominee. Ergo, she's an illegitimate POTUS, no matter how big the landslide.

(21,056 posts)Maybe a 400 EV win isn't out of the question if we can convince enough people to vote.
The only ticket out of all those who ran who would be giving her even the slightest challenge wouldve been a Kasich/Rubio one. No others would be doing a whole lot better.

(182,829 posts)and B isn't going to change anytime soon.
The math and machinery are just stacked against them.
The machinery is the established network of experienced volunteers the Dems have. The Repubs have almost no ground game. Trump has NO ground game. Starting with the Kerry campaign and then escalated by Howard Dean we have a lot of seasoned volunteers who need almost no training to get back up to speed.
Math - for a Republican to win it would have to be a landslide. They'd need to sweep 4/5ths of swing states and get back Va or hold NC. Included in the swing states is PA which hasn't voted for a Repub since Reagan. Also the west coast (CA OR WA HI) and Alaska represent a 78-3 electoral college vote sure thing advantage for Dems. Those 78 votes are 28.8% of the 270 total needed to win.

I think the better question is why didn't they endorse Kasich--he was easily their strongest candidate. He'd have locked up OH and would be worryingly competitive in Pennsylvania.

(46 posts)actually knew how to run a campaign. In poll after poll, a good 1/3 of regular voters are undecided or not participating in the election this year... Much of that is coming from disaffected Dem base and from Republicans who refuse to vote Trump, but absolutely refuse to vote for a Dem ever. I believe Trump is keeping many Republicans home or not voting in the GE for Presidential politics away because he is a nut bag. What normally happens, and we see this during the mid-terms, Dems don't show up to vote when they are unhappy with the Democratic party. There are many who are extremely pissed and won't participate anyway.. At least Trump keeps the Republican base from showing up like they normally do. Most of Republicans would just show up for any of the other turds that ran, maybe with the exception of Dr. Carson.
AND if Trump wasn't such an evil nutbag who has no business being dog catcher, let alone President of the United States, Hillary would and all the e-mail, Foundation, etc would be an albatross around the Dems necks. I think you need to hear what's happening in the real world to know how many people are pretty unimpressed with this year's choices... Mainly because the country is more than ready for some left swinging policies that re-shape the direction of the country. More of the same or saving the country from Mussolini-Trump Presidency feels like punting the future down the road another 4yrs.
On Edit: I should explain, that I am a Democrat, I live in FL, and I'm not a fucking moron... But I don't pretend that I'm ecstatic over our Democratic Presidential nominee. AND its incremental policy coupled with a neo-liberal, establishment/ corporate agenda I have the most issues with. It makes me extremely uncomfortable how many neo-cons are endorsing Clinton. However, all that said, it wouldn't matter to me who the Republican candidate was, I'd never vote for one (not unless they did full swing progressive and dropped their entire platform and that's not likely to ever happen). It wouldn't matter, at this point, if she was indicted, was falling down stairs or having full on seizures, there is no way I'd ever vote for Trump or any republican for that matter...

Kasich would have been very problematic, no doubt. Rubio would have made for an interesting campaign.

(37,160 posts)Trump's been welcome in their party for the last two presidential election cycles. They've had every chance to throw him out and they haven't done so.
His positions haven't been very different from the other Republican contenders, he's just tossed out tastier chunks of red meat.
Your voters elected him to be the nominee, and your establishment guys couldn't pull off an ouster.
You've all used his tactics to get wins, and now they're being used against you under your own banner.
You can disown him all you want, guys, but you still depend on the people who voted for him. And they're just doing what you've spent 50 years encouraging them to do.

(32,086 posts)Which is why so many of them voted for him. The funny thing about the meme, though, is that the extreme left has been making this same claim for for many weeks now.

(806 posts)I'm fairly certain that Jeb, Kasich, and Rubio would have won all the states Romney did in 2012. Kasich would have won Ohio and Jeb or Rubio would probably have won Florida. Given that, it's really not difficult to see a path to victory for any of these three men - which is why I was certain until almost the very end that they would ultimately nominate Jeb as expected.

Trump beat all other Republicans (T > ?R)
then H > ?R
But then, they aren't truly talking about ANY Republican. They are talking about the mythical cross between an alive-but-not-senile Reagan and an American-born Jesus, both of whom in actual practice would be WAY too liberal for the current Republican Party.

It just shows what a pathetic party the GOP is.
Meanwhile, we chose a former Secretary of State, Senator from New York -- and the first woman ever to receive a major party nomination.
And if she had chosen not to run, we had plenty of other great potential candidates on the back bench.

(54,405 posts)For many years, Howard Dean has been telling me that, despite his lackluster performance as party chairman, Tim Kaine was a formidable individual to whom there was much more substance than most gave him credit for. I should have remembered that Howard never made statements like that about people without knowing full well what he was talking about.

(54,405 posts)Howard signed on to her campaign before it was a campaign, and he has been a promoter on Kaine for a decade. I'm sure it was his doing that put Kaine on the short list. Interestingly enough, it was another friend (Jim Hamilton) who was charged with vetting Hillary's VP potentials, and from the looks of things, I'd say Jim did an admirable job.

(54,405 posts)Howard KNEW. He didn't rely on blog posts or TV "news" reports. He knew Kaine personally very well, and would never have supported his candidacy if he wasn't 100% sure of what he was talking about. Kudos to Hillary for trusting him on this, too.

(8,758 posts)Yes Trump is a poor canidate, and yes the Republicans have waged a 30 year war on the Clintons and Hillary in particular to poison her, but through it all she's come out on top. I have a feeling that against any of the candidates she could over come them in the GE. Maybe Kasich would have been competitive against her. He has the talent of sounding normal despite being a total freak like the rest. But that's about it.
Every other major candidate, besides Kasich, this year self imploded in the primary. Showing how weak all of them are as choices. Kasich had his own issues too, but being outwardly bat-shit crazy was not one of them.
