2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWe don't know if Colin Powell sent or received classified info on his AOL email
because he failed to turn any of them over to the State Department when they requested it. Clinton did turn over 55,000 pages when they were requested. I really wish someone in the "liberal" media would point that out.

There are already reports that House Republicans are leaking classified information from Hillary Clinton's FBI interview in violation of federal law.

(36,926 posts)Of course the noise from Rump toadies prevents anybody from hearing this. One CNN commentator actually DID restate that Powell destroyed all his emails, in violation of State Department policy. But, hey, he's "free" now, so why should he care. Liar, liar pants on fire. SHAME ON YOU COLIN POWELL!

(5,049 posts)Bullshit. He's been trying to have it both ways since he helped start the Iraq war. If he can't find his emails maybe he would like to show us those slides of Iraq's Mobile Weapons Labs again.

(108,980 posts)the server had been set up for Bill Clinton BEFORE she took the job in the State Department, and she just continued to use her email there. But Powell's words must have confirmed for her that that was the right choice.

(58,785 posts)they were discussing it, and she described it to the FBI as part of an answer during a confidential interview--which was then obtained by slimy Judicial Watch. This bears all the signs of statements reported out of context to maximize negativism. One of JW's specialties in its symbiotic relationship with the voracious 24/7/365 news maw.
We have to remember that this is politics and Powell is a politician. All Republicans at his level are frantically trying to keep control of the Senate, and even the House is in danger.

(816 posts)Madeline asked the former secretaries (Rice and Powell), to offer whatever helpful advice they had. The private server according to Joe Conason, who also wrote a book, was Powell's suggestion. Now he doesn't remember. How convenient.

(12,392 posts)What a tragic figure this guy turned out to be. I almost bought the embarrassed apologetic routine he had been giving us, as though he was a mere pawn for evil men, seeking a bit of redemption by openly choosing Obama. But the minute he feels threatened by exposure to some past truths, he reveals his true cowardly self.
Nice knife in the back to someone who served the same position as you, but with a great deal more honor, dignity and class.

It's far easier for Republicans to be obstructionist Spanish Inquisition-types because many of them don't want to help government work better in the first place.

The general media is right to ignore this stuff, IMO.

The problem is they are treating Clinton's emails like the worst crime ever committed by a government official and not putting it in proper perspective. They are also making the false claim that Powell never used his private email for classified info when they can't know if that is true or not while making it seem that Clinton emailed government secrets on a regular basis when all that has been proven is that 3 emails were sent to her with a (c) marking in the body and none in the headers.
