Donald Trump declared that the Republican Party "must do better" in reaching out to black Americans as he called on the GOP to return to its roots as the party of Abraham Lincoln.
The GOP nominee has spent the past few days making an appeal to African-American voters. He seems to be refining the message, and in the latest of a series of scripted speeches Saturday, he acknowledged the GOP's struggle to win over black voters.
"I fully recognize that outreach to the African-American community is an area where the Republican Party must do better. The GOP is the party of Lincoln, and I want our party to be the home of the African-American vote once again," Trump told supporters during a rally in Fredericksburg, Va.
"We reject the bigotry of Hillary Clinton who sees people of color only as votes, not as human beings worthy of a better future." It's the fourth consecutive speech where Trump has specifically called on African-Americans to join him.

(182,876 posts)The "rapists" comment sink him with many groups. As I've seen on TV and in personal conversations "we know he was talking about us too" is a common comment. If he's willing to disparage an entire group of people it show a complete lack of respect for many.

Donald Trump acknowledged Saturday that the Republican Party "must do better" in appealing to African-Americans.
But in the same speech here, he again slammed an order by the state's Democratic governor, Terry McAuliffe, to restore voting rights to some convicted felons who have completed their sentences, a move McAuliffe says could help African-Americans who were disproportionally affected by laws that put lifetime bans on felons.

(10,893 posts)who mocks BLM protestors, is unwilling to speak with the NAACP, and whose father was involved in racial controversy isn't exactly the right foot to start on to win us over. But then again, do they really care about making a genuine effort to siphon off Black voters from Democrats, or is this just another ploy from Trump et al. to convince skeptical swing voters and moderate RWers that the GOP doesn't thrive on racism?
