Trump's target is Obama, not Hillary.

The Trump campaign is really about trying to bring down Obama. If the nominee were Joe Biden, Trump would be running his campaign exactly the same, except instead of "Crooked Hillary" it would be "Crooked Joe." I give you this week for anyone who doubts that - Trump first said "Obama founded Isis," then kind of caught himself and added in Hillary. And of course going way back to the birther stuff, in which Trump played a big role, the target has always been Obama. This is also why Ryan and McConnell will never abandon Trump - their target also has always been Obama. They see electing Hillary as giving Obama a third term and so they will stomach anything, even Trump, to prevent it. Now they realize that it is not going to work, but they know that if they explicitly oppose Trump the Trumpers will punish down ballot Republicans and the Senate and the House will likely be lost. Ironically this may happen anyway because there is some evidence in the latest national polls that Trumpers are losing their enthusiasm for actually voting. If that happens on a large scale, not only does the Clinton landslide happen but it also will create a wave election for Democrats.
