2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTrump Really Has No Leverage on the Debates
Rick Klein: Trump says he is just now engaging with the commission to negotiate. But the commission says it does not negotiate things like dates and moderators with the campaigns. In any event, one campaign has agreed to the dates, football conflicts or not. Thinking back to the primaries, he may think he has leverage he does not. Plus, theres a downside, if it means having to swim into Hillary Clintons policy depths. (He wasnt quite as good a debater as he seems to remember himself being.) The only reason the debates would happen is if Trump decides he absolutely needs them. And that will almost certainly mean following the commission schedule through the fall.

(11,155 posts)1. What holding ones breath until the other
person gives in isn't leverage?

(4,404 posts)2. He is definitely going to need them.
Its the only real thing that might start a momentum swing at ALL in the other direction between now and November. Plus, can you imagine the utter field day the Hillary campaign (and us really...) would all have if he refused to debate? It would end him.
The debates are his last shot at turning things around, IMO. I don't think it will WORK, Hillary outclasses him and outsmarts him on every topic, but he has no shot without them.

He'll say "I won't debate a liar" to skip out.

Screaming about how unfair he is being treated all the way out the door.
