Analysis: Democrats outraising Republicans in battle for Senate control

Democrats have a substantial fundraising advantage over Republicans as they try to wrest control of the Senate from the GOP, according to a new analysis by a non-partisan think tank.
Democratic incumbents, challengers and candidates for open seats have outraised Republicans in average net receipts, the Campaign Finance Institute analysis shows. The report is based on data filed by candidates through June 30 with the Federal Election Commission.
The average Democratic senator raised more than $8 million, compared to slightly less than $6 million for the average GOP senator. Democratic challengers had average net receipts of nearly $2 million about four times as much as Republican challengers, who averaged less than $500,000.
In the battle for open seats, the average Democrat had raised about $2.5 million, compared to $1 million for the average Republican. The race for open seats in states such as Nevada and Florida could be key to control of the Senate.
The institute's analysis shows that Democratic challengers raised historically high amounts to take on Republican incumbents. Democratic challengers had average net receipts of $2 million to take on GOP incumbents, who had average net receipts of about $6 million.
