I gave books of our genealogy to my nieces and nephews during a past Christmas and mentioned some of the most interesting ancestors to them. They didn't seem particularly intrigued.
I then mentioned, in passing, that we're 9th and 10th cousins to President Dumbya (through his father). My young Republican relatives were THRILLED about that!
I've been working on my family tree for at least a decade, and I haven't found anything to disprove that I'm 8th cousins with Dubya (and therefore 7th cousins once removed from HW).

And on my mother's James Buchanan is a first cousin 6 times removed, because apparently I'm not allowed to be related to the good presidents LOL.
... in regard to alleged distant ancestors.
I was lucky to have ancestors who lived in areas that didn't have courthouses that burnt down. The records were pretty good. Once you go back far enough, it all becomes sparse and pretty unreliable unless connections to "royal" families are made.
The Revolutionary War pension files were tremendous! Some of my ancestors even included old Bible records!
I helped Maryland identify the grandparents and great-grandparents of General Otho Holland Williams through my Williams research. One of my direct ancestors was Otho's uncle. Here's a Peale portrait of Otho:
Like I said, I haven't been involved in that hobby for years. Once it became so difficult to eke out further information, I questioned what the heck I was doing with my time. LOL.
