Related: About this forumTrump: ‘I don’t know why we’re not leading by a lot’
Donald Trump said hes puzzled as to why hes not leading Hillary Clinton by large margins at a rally Wednesday night, making no mention of the controversies that have mired his campaign all week.
Speaking to a large crowd at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Florida, Trump boasted about the turnout at his events, citing it as an indicator of his support.
We go to Oklahoma, we had 25,000 people. We had 21,000 people in Dallas. We had 35,000 people in Mobile, Alabama. We have these massive crowds, the Republican nominee said. Youve got thousands of people outside trying to get in (today), and this is one hell of a big stadium.
Trump then mocked the Democratic nominees use of scripted speeches, marveling at his own improvisational style even in large venues. Do you ever see Hillary Clinton? If she speaks in front of 24 people shes got the teleprompter, he jested. If she came here tomorrow so look at this place, packed, thousands outside, we actually put screens outside so, Hillary, if she came here, if she had 500 people Id be surprised.

(56,828 posts)to speak means that either his campaign is hideously disorganized or they are sending Trump to places where he knows he'll get big friendly crowds, and not to swing states or blue states (Trump wants to compete in New York, he says)

(56,828 posts)the Dallas Cowboys draw 80,000 per football game.
The Dallas Mavericks draw 19,000/game 40 times per years.
The Texas Rangers just outside of Dallas draw 34,000/game 80 times per year.
And, I'm sure local colleges draw pretty well for football and basketball games as well, though I think UT in Austin and Texas A&M outside the Dallas area draw more.

(18,402 posts)Rally sizes are not an indication of electoral support. They're generally held to make it look like you have strong support, but in the end, they're just pep rallies for the people who already support you, almost always held in places where you know you already have strong support.
Hillary Clinton does not do large rallies, does not like large rallies, and probably does not believe in large rallies (though she may do some at the end of the campaign just for optics). She prefers to meet in more intimate groups, in places and with people whose support she does not yet have. She knows she has the votes of her supporters, she's looking to expand support by targeting specific issues important to specific populations in specific regions. And that is a path to electoral victory--iffy county by iffy county, and from swing state to swingable state. This is why candidates don't expend resources (money, staff, ads) in places they know they already have locked up.
