I called up my draft board and asked if they could take me, and they were very happy to oblige.

My dad and all my uncles served in WWII. I grew up with the idea that when your country needed you, you stepped up and served. Then JFK told us to "Ask not..."

I chose the draft because I could get out in only 2 years in case I didn't like being in the military.

My draftee service number was US56704333.

have done anything not to go - and lots joined the National Guard just in case. But, also remember at that point in time, going was like a death sentence. (1969?) and we all were doing the anti-war candlelight vigils every night.

How did the lottery work - did everyone get a letter? I want to say I remember a specific night when everyone was watching TV and some people were incredibly happy and some incredible unhappy which doesn't make sense if they already knew.

You are a great and admirable person P3N !!!! P.S. My 94 year old dad was in the Navy - So Pacific in WW2 - not knowing any better, I recently bought him a Navy cap - but he refused to wear it because it said "Retired" on it and he wasn't retired. Lots of honor in that generation !!

Even at the young age of 18 I felt that when your country goes to war, you serve.

It was only later that I felt lied to and betrayed by my country and turned decidedly antiwar.

And as it turned out, the lottery would have gotten me 2 years later in any case. I finally looked it up and discovered my very low number.

I volunteered for Infantry, for Infantry Officer Candidate School, for Vietnam, and for combat assignment. I served as an Infantry rifle platoon leader in the 101st Airborne Division, and my little brother served with me in Vietnam until I got hit.

Why didn't I think of that bone spur dodge?

effective a "screw you" response to criticism is. So many politicians cower, spend days formulating responses. It all makes them look weak. A little outrage and turn the tables works like a charm. Although with Trump - he's taken it to an absurd nth degree. I know I am the only one here - but wish Hillary would show a little outrage about the personal emails she deleted. "hey, a team of attorneys determined what was personal - I challenge anyone, public figure or private citizen to release all their personal emails. Nope, didn't think so."

If the recipient hadn't mentioned it was a copy....Trump wouldn't have even had that (real/fake) idea in his head. No one would have. This PROVES he was purposely lying.

Of course, everyone else probably figured this out hours ago..LOL

Frank Burns particularly coveted the Purple Heart. He first applied for one when he threw out his back in "Sometimes Your Hear the Bullet", but Hawkeye stole it and presented it to the underaged soldier Private Wendell who was being sent home but who badly needed something to impress his girlfriend. in "The Kids", Burns again applied for a Purple Heart on the grounds that his eye was injured by "shell fragments" during an enemy sniper attack. Hawkeye and B.J. was aghast at this, since the injury was caused by egg-shell fragments!

One of the moving pictures I saw was last year when my son was in a wedding for a USMA Class of 2011 classmate and every one of the groom's wedding party (with the exception of my son) had a purple heart on their dress blues, they were all around 25 years old. The groom earned his purple heart by protecting his unit from an IED at the cost of losing 1 leg and damaging the other.
