Report: Senior Republican Officials ‘Clearly Think It’s a Possibility’ Trump Can Be Replaced

On Good Morning America Wednesday, ABC’s Jon Karl reported that senior officials in the GOP are now actively strategizing and having conversations about the process to replace Donald Trump atop the party’s ticket should he drop out.

This, after another disastrous day on the campaign trail for the real estate titan turned politician, who recently said that he would not necessarily be endorsing members of his own party in their upcoming elections.

“Senior officials at the party are actively exploring what would happen if Trump dropped out and replaced him on the ballot,” Karl told GMA’s George Stephanopoulos.

He continued, “The answer… is they can’t force him out; he would have to go out voluntarily. And it would have to be the 167 members of the RNC through a complicated process to pick a new candidate. And it would have to happen by early September.”

The situation is truly an unprecedented one. While party officials and Republican establishment have long hoped for the “presidential pivot” of sorts from Trump, it has become increasingly clear that no such change in tone is happening. He sarcastically said of House Speaker Paul Ryan‘s upcoming reelection bid he’s, “not quite there yet” to officially endorse. He further said of Arizona Senator and former party nominee John McCain, “I’ve always felt that [McCain] should have done a much better job for the vets.”

or they can't get a name on the ballot, and it would requiring controlling Trump enough to get him to step down. If they could control him, they wouldn't be in this situation.

Do they really think they can control him to the point where he would step down?

I think he will just become more unhinged. It should get good now.

If I were a republican, I would just sit this one out and start thinking about what to do four years from now. Their party though, may be irrevocably damaged, and that's just fine by me.

... looking for a way to safe-face. They don't want the history books to show them as a party that supported Trump until the very end.

He can only be replaced if he dies or quits.

And the later this thing goes, the less likely his name can be replaced on ballots. In 29 states, that means his slate of electors would be bound to vote for him BY LAW.

Essentially, there's about a 45 day window left where he could die or quit and the Republicans could replace him. After that, it's a hot mess that would likely end up being determined by the House of Representatives if Hillary does not reach the 270 elector threshold.

If nothing else, this serves as an illustration of how badly Trump's campaign is doing.

get going yesterday when he stated that Republican leaders should withdraw their endorsements. It has to be part of a strategy meant to influence the entire election picture. Just undermining the leadership's pretense of being separate from Trump, underlining that they are with him?

We are way off script here.

How does one replace one of the two major party nominated US presidential candidates? There isn't even a protocol for such a thing.

Clusterfuck!
