On Good Morning America Wednesday, ABCs Jon Karl reported that senior officials in the GOP are now actively strategizing and having conversations about the process to replace Donald Trump atop the partys ticket should he drop out.
This, after another disastrous day on the campaign trail for the real estate titan turned politician, who recently said that he would not necessarily be endorsing members of his own party in their upcoming elections.
Senior officials at the party are actively exploring what would happen if Trump dropped out and replaced him on the ballot, Karl told GMAs George Stephanopoulos.
He continued, The answer
is they cant force him out; he would have to go out voluntarily. And it would have to be the 167 members of the RNC through a complicated process to pick a new candidate. And it would have to happen by early September.
The situation is truly an unprecedented one. While party officials and Republican establishment have long hoped for the presidential pivot of sorts from Trump, it has become increasingly clear that no such change in tone is happening. He sarcastically said of House Speaker Paul Ryans upcoming reelection bid hes, not quite there yet to officially endorse. He further said of Arizona Senator and former party nominee John McCain, Ive always felt that [McCain] should have done a much better job for the vets.
Karl added Wednesday, He is so unpredictable right now, they are no unable to control his message
they clearly think its a possibility.

(3,226 posts)We need to work to get Hillary's positive rating up now. If he is replaced they may put in a new face who will give us a harder run.

(13,340 posts)There will be a major revolt in the GOP. Trump would have to leave "voluntarily." That seems unlikely to happen to me without the liberal application of cash into Trump's pocket.

(26,268 posts)The people who voted from Trump, and have been swayed away by his antics, could still be a sizable number and they would feel totally disenfranchised. My guess is their votes, if they bothered to vote, would go to Stein or Johnson.
And then there is the worry of how they would physically react to Trump leaving the ticket. We are not talking about people with a strong grip on rational thought or behavior.
I think they just need to suck it up, accept the potential defeat and do some deep introspective thinking. If that is possible.

Trump gets over (what he cares most about), the GOP gets over (they run someone in the general who didn't have to win the primary), and dems have to scramble. It's one reason why dems have to focus not so much on Trump's hands but on the whole dysfunctional, morally bankrupt GOP that spawned him in the first place.
Ryan, Romney, or Pence will be the saviors, riding in to save the gop and the country from destruction. Adelson, Romney, Kochs, and the RNC will pony up the money....chump change to save the WH and more importantly all the down ticket races.
