The question isnt so much if Donald Trump can win the election as whether or not hell still be the GOP candidate come November. Nobody can predict what mad trajectory the Republican nominees campaign might take. But given Trumps erratic, politically self-destructive behavior, its reasonable to suspect he might get forced out or quit in a huff rather than face the ultimate indignity of losing to a girl.
Just the other day, Rep. Richard Hanna of upstate New York became the first Republican member of Congress to disavow Trump and endorse Hillary Clinton. Describing himself as stunned by the callousness of the candidates remarks about Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the Gold Star parents whose son died fighting in Iraq, Hanna called Trump a national embarrassment, and unfit to serve.
Hanna added that while he disagrees with Hillary Clinton on many issues, she stands and has stood for causes bigger than herself for a lifetime. That matters. The implication, of course, is that Trumps only cause is himself and his grotesquely swollen ego. How long before Sen. John McCain, whose own heroic service as a Vietnam POW Trump has impugned, decides that he too must act? How long before his patriotism forces him to agree with President Obama that there has to come a point at which you say enough?

(11,605 posts)Given that Hillary remains unpopular and can't seem to put this e-mail thing to bed, I am afraid if the GOP has the chance to pick a more "normal" candidate they might win.

(58,785 posts)They are fighting desperately to keep control of the House and Senate. Plus, they are fighting for GOP control of state governments.
Reportedly, they must have the Trump voters, nationally speaking, to keep control. Offend the trumpists, and they could lose everything.
McCain could be in trouble in AZ. Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick is polling very close. I don't know if turning on Trump would help him there or not, but it might become a national event. His primary is Aug 30. He had 3 Republican opponents. One just dropped out, but his name will remain on the ballot. He's unlikely to be primaried, but wouldn't that be lovely?
