He already said as much in the primary.

Like you I don't think they will attempt it. Crazy base would go nuts, and would not vote for house and senate republicans they would blame for cheating Trump.

They know the election is probably lost. They still need to get those Trump voters to get out to the polls to vote for their down ticket candidates.

so it's not enough for the party officials to want trump out, they'd have to convince enough trump delegates?

assuming that's the case, it is as i thought, only death or incapacitation would lead to this.

in theory trump could withdraw but in practice his ego won't permit that.

The establishment types like Ryan and McConell know the only way to keep this from being a bigger disaster is to hold ol to the congress.

They will lose that too if we GOTV. But they will not replace trump. Nobody who could win would want to jump into that chaos.
