2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumGame this out: what do the Trump diehards do if the RNC replaces Trump?
Say they replace him with a boring sane regular conservative Republican.
Will the Trumpers turn out for the appointed nominee in November?

This will continue until one day they wake up, realize they forgot to vote and Hillary is president.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

There's millions of 'em, and for that reason only I'm hoping the RNC lets him finish himself off. Or not.

He has the nomination. That's it.
All this rubbish that he doesn't really want the White House -- that he will somehow magically resign to have god only knows who to replace him (you pick) -- or that the party will somehow contrive a way to replace him, are utterly ridiculous!
Drumpf is the GOP presidential nominee. Out of 17 candidates, this is who they have chosen.
Consider it a blessing in disguise.
Or maybe just:
"Madness! Madness!"

(5,648 posts)because the Republican establishment was all against him - and you know he will - initially at least the majority of his die hard supporters will refuse to support his replacement especially that person is a establishment Republican like Ryan. Think of Sanders supporters when they realized he couldn't win, except on steroids.
Eventually, some of them, maybe a majority will come to a conclusion that it is a binary choice between whoever and Hillary and they will hold their nose and vote for whoever. How many will cross over in that manner will to some extent depend how much Trump continues to seek attention after he drops out by continuing to rile up his former followers against the Republican establishment. By the way, I think that would be very likely.
On the other hand, an establishment Republican replacement should attract the Republicans, right leaning Independents and anti Hillary folks who would have never been able to bring themselves to vote for Trump and planned to not vote for the top of the ticket or vote for Johnson or even Hillary.
The question will be whether these new Republican voters will out number who refuse to vote Republican because they believe that their guy Trump was shafted.
My best guess is that it will be a wash with the Republican replacement candidate getting about the same level of support as Trump which probably won't be enough to win.
However, my preference is that Trump stay in the race. We can never accurately predict how the ugly underbelly of the GOP will react in a situation like that and I would rather deal with the devil we know.
