2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSomething major is wrong, isn't it?
Doesn't it feel like something big has changed?
New tension? Sense of doom?
Out of nowhere.
Something is wrong. Something big is wrong.
Am I the only one who feels this way?

(16,020 posts)I am angry and I feel helpless at the same time. Lots of legislation is being passed, similar legislation in a lot of states. Some group is coordinating this and it is not the GOP, they are delivering it though

(1,068 posts)to speak out! Look at the facebook postings to the crazies who support anti-women legislation. No, I'm not feeling helpless at all. I am loving that women will be engaged this season to come out and give a smack down to anti-women politicians.
I find it amusing that they actually think they can be anti-women and still get the women vote. Not gonna happen. Because women are women first, before all else. And hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

(1,362 posts)and 1 person getting a raise in nothing but anecdotal. "Too big to fail" criminal banks control more than 70% of stock trading and take a look at the U6 unemployment rate if you actually want to know about unemployment.
I don't understand what "Obama doesn't have a real contender to deal with" has to do with anything the poster mentioned either.

(11,481 posts)over the last 6 months. But I say enjoy it while you can because it won't last. This is capitalism. Boom and bust is written into the system itself. And since capitalism needs constant expansion (also built into the system) the booms will be smaller and the busts will be bigger in the future because capitalism is running into natural limits on it's expansion. The next recession I'd wager, will be worse than the Great Recession that we might be easing out of. And the one after that even worse.
This cycle won't change until we change the system to one that's more sustainable.

(32,139 posts)Our government has largely been sold, the wealth of this country is being systematically transferred to the one percent, and our legal protections are now being stripped away from us so that we cannot defend ourselves. The United States of America is, quite seriously, on its way to becoming a corporate, authoritarian state.
The economic and civil rights assaults on the 99 percent are coming on a daily basis now, and they are bipartisan. We had better wake the hell up and start to acknowledge that, because you can't solve a problem if you refuse to face reality.
Banks and corporations don't have morality. Their only loyalty is to profit and the bottom line. Period. That is why it is so deadly dangerous to cede our government, our lives, and the lives of our children to them.
We need to wake up and occupy before it is too late.

(17,493 posts)Some do feel the world will end or change dramatically on this day. I tend to be skeptical. If it happens, I will not have to worry about the amount of money I have in my retirement fund.
Armageddon involving a nuclear war between Iran and Israel and either the return of Christ or the reappearance of the Twelfth Imam depending on your religion? Unlikely, but many people believe in what might well end up as a self fulfilling prophecy.
Total economic breakdown and a sudden worldwide economic depression? Possible as it seems that our economic system is a house of cards. Likely, no.
Could the Republicans take over the White House and both houses of Congress. This might be possible if they could find a candidate who wasn't a member of the 1% and was totally disconnected with the plight of the middle class and the poor or so far right that only people who believe that the world is 6000 years old would vote for him.
Could an enormous asteroid be headed to earth to annihilate our civilization. Yes, but I seriously doubt that the people who rule our world know when this will happen. It would be hard to keep such a secret considering how many amateur astronomers love watching the skies.
Bird flu or some such pandemic? Always possible.
The strange part is that I also have a feeling of impending doom. I can't find any reason for it but it lurks in the back of my mind.
I think people, including myself, are just depressed about the Great Recession and all the wars we have recently fought for little or no reason. Also many people are discouraged about the inability of our two parties to compromise and make any progress on most issues. These are not happy days in this nation.

(4,310 posts)that have been making payments to collection agencies for
debts they acknowledge and agreed to pay. In both cases
they were at the grocery store or other business and learned
their accounts had been frozen. Days later they received court
documents authorizing the seizure of all their funds. They were
never given an opportunity to appear in court, show documentation
of agreed to payment plan, nothing.
Both of these incidents happened in the last month. Something is very wrong.
Consumers, citizens have no protection from banks and other predatory
institutions. Something has gotten much worse in the last few years.

More and more when entering into agreements with companies we are agreeing to arbitration, which is basically unregulated courts paid for by one side.
Oddly the supreme court sees no problem with this
EmeraldCityGrl
(4,310 posts)with agreed last Sept. to make $300 payments every month until the
$5000 debt was paid. All legal procedures were done without their
knowledge until two days after the seizure when they received the
court docs in the mail. They had no opportunity to consult an attorney,
consumer advocate nothing. I lent them the money for rent and others
gave them groceries. This is a family with small children. The seizure
took every dime they had in the account even an overdraft of $100.
The next step is debtors prison which I would have laughed at a couple
years ago. With the privatization of the prison industrial complex, continued
loss of constitutional rights I'm no longer laughing. Leaving a working
family destitute without an opportunity for legal recourse to satisfy a collection
agency (Alliance One) is beyond the pale.

(2,166 posts)They're showing how crazy they really are and, at this point in time, they have the media megaphone. Nothing has changed, they're more visible and not the majority.
I think things are looking up. People I know who've been looking for jobs have recently found employment in their profession, not a rinkydink low paying type job. I also was at a meeting at our labor department recently for a seminar which, according to the speaker, was usually packed. That day it wasn't. She did say that it was an indication that there's improvement.
WHen I watch or read the news, I see such horrible things going, but horrible things have always been going on. We just have it in our face constantly.

(31,706 posts)What you're seeing/hearing are the things "conservatives" have talked about among themselves for years. They did it below the radar...in churches, conferences...on hate radio on religious radio. These are the long held regressive ideals that were part of this "perfect conservative" world that they felt once existed (of course it never did). This is the gestation of decades of talking points that broke into the open as part of the race to the bottom in the ruhspublican clown car demolition derby.
In the past you didn't hear a lot of this bile as the party elite controlled the great unhinged...making sure they get on those church buses on election day. That control is now gone as hate radio and faux noise are now wagging the dog. It's not that Rectorum suddenly believed that a college education turns you into a "librul" or that Nooooot thinks there's a "war on religion"...these are dogwhistles that have long resonated among wingnutia.
Women's rights...along with minorities go back to their being "strict constructionists" where blacks were 3/5th of a man and women were property. It was a world designed for white males and those who threaten that order are the cause of all today's problems. Pretty simple way to look at things, no? Thus when the war on women was unleashed it was just the shining of a light on what has been a long, privately held mantra of the right wing. As the party moved further and further right it's isolated itself from the majority and is over-reaching in a way that's both wreckless and dangerous...

(1,362 posts)knowing full well that large speculative criminal corporations that are "too big to fail" are being allowed to rip us all off every single day. Also note that about 25% of the people are 10 to 100 thousand dollars in debt, some with much more due to upside down housing.
The sense of doom isn't a sense at all, it's people facing the reality that the future is bleak in a criminally controlled country.

(36,447 posts)There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and they carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
You better Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
You better Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
You better Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

(29,135 posts)I think the big issue, aside from the ever present threat of nuclear war with Iran, is that at this moment there is no clear end game. No one flying the plane. At least not to anywhere we'd want to land. I have been afraid of where it's going to end up for a while.

and its that Obama is going to have a landslide victory
and people are not letting rush limbaugh get away with it like before
and people are not letting Rupert Murdoch get away with it like before
accountability is happening and the rightwing thugs are getting theirs
its not automatic renewal
a major tsunami of great change is happening, because of our President
to quote REM it's the end of the world as they knew it, and I feel fine.
