John Conyers has a primary opponent, this year

I heard her interviewed on NPR. It is Janice Winfrey, Detroit City Clerk. She thinks that Conyers is now 'out of touch' with his district. From reading about Ms Winfrey, I don't really see where she is supporting anything different from Congressman Conyers.

I was lucky enough to meet Congressman Conyers, a number of times and he was beyond impressive. I haven't heard any buzz about his health, but he is 87.

3. Really? In the Primary? This is the first time I caught it, I guess

I always think of him as untouchable.

We have a whole lot of Democrats who are running with no primary opposition, in my area. And a whole lot of local Democrats with nobody on the other side running against them, in November. I love my district.

4. I think he is in jeopardy this time

I am not in his district, but have lived on SE Michigan for most of my life. I think he is in jeopardy of losing to Ms. Winfrey this time.

While he is an icon in Detroit, he hasn't been all that visible in his district for a number of years. The Conyers name was tainted rather substantially when his wife Monica, Detroit City Council President, was convicted of bribery a few years ago. She had been released from jail, but her reputation was ruined.

Due to population changes and redistricting, his district was expanded to areas that haven't traditionally been represented by him. Ms. Winfrey is not a newcomer and has been building her political resume. It is a guaranteed blue district, so the winner of the primary will win the General election.

6. I noticed she's been in the clerk job for 10 years, so she's no novice

I just have a very soft spot for John Conyers. Before I met him, I thought of him as a bigger than life individual, but he is actually one of the most down to earth people you could ever meet.

I also had met, and had a nice conversation with his ex-wife, Monica. That was a strange relationship and I felt bad him, when she went around the twist.

I'll definitely keep an eye on the results, tonight.

Every incumbent should face a challenge. May the best man or woman win. Let the people decide.
