Rev. Barber makes right-wing go nuts: ‘Jesus was a brown-skinned Palestinian Jew’

Reverend William Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and leader of North Carolina’s Forward Together movement, just brought the house down at the DNC with one of the most earth-shattering speeches of the week.

Describing Jesus as a “brown-skinned Palestinian Jew,” Rev. Barber stressed the importance of preserving democracy and fighting for justice during his speech:

“In this season, when some want to harden and stop the heart of our democracy, we are being called like our foremothers and fathers to be the moral defibrillators of our time. We must shock this nation with the power of love. We must shock this nation with the power of mercy. We must shock this nation and fight for justice for all. We can’t give up on the heart of our democracy. Not now, not ever.”

Rev. Barber is famous for leading a months-long civil disobedience campaign called Moral Mondays, which began in 2013, and targeted Republican state lawmakers in North Carolina over their swift passage of laws curtailing voting rights, cutting public services, and attacking the rights of women and minorities.

In my living room.

As a Christian who believes that the right wing extremists have hijacked my religion, it was very meaningful to me to actually hear a man of God saying what many of us have been saying for years. I'm tired of Christianity being used by the extremists to promote their agenda.

Love. Compassion. Encouragement. Value. Dignity.

Powerful concepts, and so much more in line with the teachings than hate, fear and division.

I'm not sure how brown ancient Semites were, but Jesus was a Galilleen, from a territory that was historically linked to, but different from, Judea. Judeans became what we would call Jews, but that is still backdating to a large extent. And Palestine was an administrative nomenclature. It included many people who were part of ancient Israelite religions, including Samarians, who over time converted by will and by force.

I get that Barber is trying to show and interpenetration of identities, but it was a clumsy construction.

So Galilleens and Judeans are a different race/skin color? My apologies if the question sounds doltish. I find the history of this region as it relates to ethnicity and race very confusing, so I'm open to being educated.

and Arabs migrated and spread from the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century, long after Jesus existed.

The guy was wrong, and I was angry as hell he injected Israel/Palestinians into an otherwise decent speech.

Most likely brown-skinned.

We all should understand he was not blond and blue-eyed. Even in the Bible he is described as having bronzed-colored skin and hair like lamb's wool — you know, kinky.
