Last month, the state Election Commission unanimously ruled that Lugar is eligible to run for office in Indiana even though he gave up his residence there.

yeah doesnt make sense to me either

Lugar is being primaried by a Teabagger. If it all works out that the nutcase can beat Lugar and then Joe Donnelly can beat the Teabagger, then great. But if the Republican is going to win anyway (which in Indiana is always a pretty good bet) I'd rather have Dick Lugar represent me 1000x more than that wacko.

so maybe the state isn't as much a dead loss as it once might have been.

I'd love to see Vance Hartke avenged. He had his flaws, but he was a good solid labor Dem, and never deserved the blowout loss Lugar inflicted on him in 1976.

If this ruling isn't thrown out...wouldn't Lugar have to resign his Senate seat, at least in theory?

(if that did happen...does Indiana fill U.S. Senate vacancies through special elections, or would we end up with appointed Senator Mitch Daniels?)

Don't tell the wingnuts that one of theirs is part of voter fraud scheme. It might make their heads explode.

This is all being pushed by the teabagger trying to knock Lugar out in the primary. They call Lugar a RINO because he occasionally actually talks to Democrats.

There aren't too many middle of the road senators to go after anymore now that Snowe is leaving. Collins will be the senior Senator from Maine which puts a target on her for the 2014 primary.
