2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAfter years of watching Chris Matthews, I need a break from him.
I can't believe that he heaped praise on Romney who acted like an a-hole and kept the president and everyone waiting two hours until he was ready to concede. This was just another example of how the GOP for the past 5 years (4 yrs as President and 1+yrs as a candidate) have tried to de-legitimimize this President by treating him as if he was just a common houseboy who had forgotten his place, and they were going to set him straight by making him wait, particularly since though the Romney campaign have known for at least a couple of days that the numbers were not going their way. When even Meghan Fox at Faux News is ready to accept defeat, you can hardly call Romney's keeping the people waiting until he and Ann could come to terms with the results as gracious. FTR, I don't believe that the Romney campaign did not have a concession speech ready. I think this is just another example of a classic 1%er feeling that they play by their own set of rules and the rest of the world can just wait.
The first words out of Chris's mouth after Obama's acceptance speech was "he didn't thank Bill Clinton". Well as Lawrence O'Donnell pointed out he did call Bill Clinton right after Romney conceded and thanked him, as he did every chance he had on the campaign trail and that was the appropriate thing to do. What you do in private is much more revealing than what you do when people are watching. What more do you want from him Chris, to lick his boots?
So as if that was not enough last night, perhaps chalking it up to a long day and and even longer night, Chris double downs this morning on Morning Joe when Joe asks him about the President's acceptance speech, Chris says "don't ask me that, ask me something else".
Note to Chris; you have a small but faithful audience to begin with. Don't piss us off. We're the ones that bought your book. It wasn't the Repubs or the Romney supporters who are still chastising you for your "Obama thrill up your leg comment".
Remember Chris was the first to go ballistic after the first debate, which sent the Obama poll numbers into a tailspin. I think it was an overreaction and it almost cost Dems the presidency. Those who heard the debate, including reporters in a media room who didn't watch the debate via a split-screen said that the President didn't do that bad. It was the twitter group that started the momentum.
Sure it may not have been Obama's finest moment, but recall that two days before that 1st debate, Drudge and Co. were trying to portray the President as the proverbial "Angry Black Man". So when Romney comes out there and starts denying everything he's been running on for the past year and a half, the President is trying to obsorb that and stay on focus with his message while not spending the entire debate playing defense, which as we all know is a losing strategy.
So today is a day for reflection on what the future could be, and time to take a break from the President's naysayers. This President has been the subject of a level of disdain and loathing by the GOP which is unprecedented, and not based in reality or any action on the President's part but steeped in right-winged bigotry and invented vitriol and hatred to ensure his failure.

I think he was pissed off at Romney but took it out on president Obama.

(33,497 posts)the one I need a break from is Rachel. She is just too much sometimes. But you are right he did go on and on too much about not thanking Bill Clinton.

(2,090 posts)I know he didn't mean it that way, but wow. That's ghoulish. Imagine if Hannity had said that about a hurricane that could be taken as helping a Republican. We'd go mad.
Matthews really needs to think about what he's saying before he opens his mouth.

(24,096 posts)it's burns me that Chris, in his personal emotional world sometimes doesn't think that his words affect a lot more than his own selfish desires. That raging bull thing he had about Obama's first debate was careless, selfish and very unprofessional.
These people think they are movie stars, or something. I can't take them seriously any more - they are in it for themselves - for their paychecks or their book selling abilities or their ego but it's all about them them me me me.

(3,222 posts)No one other than, perhaps, Al Sharpton, was as critical of what Mitt allowed his campaign to do. He stood up to Rience Priebus to his face with Scarborough doing everything in his power to divert the attack.
I agree with him that the President should have publicly thanked Bill Clinton.I hope that his private call was as effusive as it should have been.
Chris is a problematic person. He lets his emotions get the best of himself way too often. He interrupts and talks over people. He went way over the top after the first debate, but the fact is that Obama let Mitt back in the race that night. But with all his personal idiosyncrasies, Chris was one of the most effective voices for the President and the Democratic Party.

(3,102 posts)when I think back over the past several months where he has relentlessly and vociferously denounced the Republican party, I have no doubt his heart is in the right place.

(7,581 posts)I think he melted down after the debate because he knows we needed Obama to win four more years. He is very aggressive in calling out racism, as he did with that Romney advisor Prince Reibus Something. He IS old school and didn't kick Romney when he was down.
I like him more than I did during the Bush years, that's for sure. I loved when he called Romney out for calling Ryan's budget, "Mah-velous!" He was very aggressive for Obama this time.

(3,335 posts)my perceived missteps seem over the top. I was willing to over look the "he didn't thank Clinton" comment last night. This morning when he called attention to it when Joe asked the question, I was puzzled as to where this criticism is coming from. I knew I needed to step away for a while. Look, I tape Chris's show every day as well as all of the MSNBC evening lineup and watch it later in the evening. I even tape Chris's Sunday show on NBC, so I am a big fan. If I don't get to all the shows each day, I don't miss the Chris Matthews Show. So I'm grateful for the voice he has been for this administration. I'm just wondering if there is another explanation for his actions lately.

(15,245 posts)I think I understand what Obama was saying and what is meant by "post partisan" idealism. Matthews like Franklin Roosevelt welcomes their disdain. Maybe with a second term Obama can turn the opposition around. I am probably closer to Matthews on this but I am willing to give Obama a chance.

(25,415 posts)I think he has a real alliance to the Clintons. Talks about Hillary running all the time. Perhaps is overly critical of President Obama because of this?
He is okay. On our side. Better then some of the idiots on CNN.

(5,815 posts)You would think after all we've been through these past few months, he could have allowed the celebration to go on with wild abandon last night. Instead he had to go on a rant about the President not mentioning Bill Clinton "and all he did to help with the final push". Well, just who the hell does he think the President called first after Romney conceded?
Chris definitely needs to take a much needed rest so he an re-evaluate some of the stuff he told us over these past few months. His behavior after the first debate started a wave against the President that turned into a ground swell of undeserved criticism and damn near wrecked the whole campaign. It was shameful but to this day he has not explained or apologized for his over the top rhetoric that night. (Too much medication? Not enough?)
If Tweety doesn't take a break or at the very least come on his show and EXPLAIN himself in detail that makes sense, then he should not be surprised if it's the viewers who decide that WE need the break and will give him a chance to cool down and think over his behavior of the past few months without his usual audience. For some it will be a permanent exodus. Time will tell if we are willing to give him another chance.

(4,310 posts)To say his reaction to the first debate nearly cost Obama the presidency is ridiculous. MSNBC has a captive audience and
most Reps. aren't paying attention to what goes on there. If anything, you assume MSNBC and Matthews have more
influence than they do. Obama zinging Matthews at the Al Smith dinner would not have happened if Obama felt Matthews
was a threat to his campaign. If Obama get's Matthews is a little over the top at times but his heart is in the right place
it's a shame a few others can't see it.

(2,599 posts)but I've been off Tweetie since he publicly excoriated Bill Clinton during his presidency. I'll never forgive him for the mistreatment he heaped on BC then.
He treated Clinton like some sort of illegitimate hillbilly from the get go and now he's carrying his water. Puhleeze.
