2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhy is Andrea Mitchell making a big deal out a roll call vote?
I didn't hear any drama prior to the RNC roll call, and the only time candidate are nominated by acclimation is when they are the incumbent. The exception was 2008 because of the Michigan/Florida mess the led to a near draw in delegates to begin win. The states will be called. The votes will be declared, and Hillary will be nominated. WTF is the drama in that?

(435 posts)they are going to try and get the super delegates to switch to bernie. It will only be a handful of them, but enough to cause drama for a few minutes.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)there was worry about it being divisive, but Clinton wanted everyone who voted for her to be represented at the roll call--especially those who had dreamed of a woman president, etc.
It was the right move, and I think the roll call will be the right move today. Just hope the boo-bird punks from yesterday leave the chairs on the floor.

(58,717 posts)because they do it alphabetically. Vermont will be called way late in the process.
This is not big deal. It allows the Bernie supporters to vote for their candidate and assuage their consciences. Then we move forward and get Hillary elected.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)states will just "pass" and let other states go before them.
This is usually done so that a swing state's votes will put the nominee over the top.

(660 posts)The networks like chaos. A lot of the network employees were actually disappointed (and obviously disappointed) that things went so well last night. Did you see them out there trying to find people who were upset? I saw Andrea interviewing Chuck Schumer and Chuck was just ecstatic about how well things had gone last night. At the end of the interview, Andrea looked so deflated. She just couldn't rattle old Schumer.

(12,504 posts)she is nasty, sees things from a very negative space, and last night during several of her interviews was foggy, seemed to loose her spot in the questioning, seemed frustrated over any and all distractions/noises/volume.

(9,736 posts)It would be like, "The great state of Georgia, home of blah, blah, blah, blah, etc., yields to the state of Massachusetts for the purpose of placing a name in nomination for the office of President of the United States." It could really get exciting, what with cheers and demonstrations taking place when a candidate's name was mentioned. 1956: Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver....such exotic names.
1960: John F. Kennedy! 1964: Fannie Lou Hamer and the Mississippi Freedom Democrats. I wouldn't want a return to the smoke-filled rooms of yesteryear, but the primary system really took a lot of fun out of the conventions.

Joy Reid said last night that Donna Brazille is to be thanked for seeing the big picture...she said the steam needed to be let out and that by night's end, the room would be more unified. She was right...

The convention is doing well in promoting healing. Kudos to Bernie Sanders for being a mensch.
Time to stop fighting the primaries people. With unity we win.
Roll-call. Then acclimation.

(15,805 posts)This was another milksop to Sanders supporters who demanded the opportunity to vote for him, which means they will get his name in the nomination. Sanders has about 1,900 delegates, and they are hoping for a miraculous coup. But there are about 6,000 delegates and alternates at the convention, and Clinton needs 2,383 to formally receive the party's nomination, so lots of hurt feelings to come.

I thought it went really well. Lots of cheers for both candidates, some moving moments like when Bernie's brother cast a vote for him and when the old woman from Arizona cast a vote for Hillary, and Bernie was magnanimous at the end.
It was cathartic for me and hopefully for many other Bernie supporters.

(12,504 posts)I also agree that many of his supporters were there wih him. Some were just as I had imagined. Angry, not so magnanimous, pushing placards into the faces of others to get them in front of the camera. I was pleasantly surprised that many more showed restraint.

(2,900 posts)I've been a delegate, and it's kind of fun to go through the states. But there isn't a non-drama reason not to take a written vote of each delegation and have accountants add them up. It would take far less time.
The great state of Pennsytucky, the golden archway to the heartland and porn production capital of the rust belt casts its 269 votes for the next President of the United States, William Jennings Bryan! The crowd roars.
