2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhy do you support Hillary? I am asking this because I am tired of hearing that Trump is the only
reason to vote for her.
Some of us have supported her for years and did so during the primaries.
So what were your reasons.
(i will outline mine in a response to this thread)

(53,866 posts)1. HIV/AIDS: she and Bill changed the national tone on HIV/AIDS. they have a long long history of treating HIV as a disease and not as divine curse on gay people.
2. She is very pro-female and that is very important to me. (the specific issues of abortion, child care, equal pay, and paid leave)
3. She has strong ties with the black community and that is important to me.
4. She knows her shit and is competent as fuck. I love competence.
5. Young girls are raised to thwart their ambition, and she is a role model for ambitious women.
6. Her fights in the 90's inspired me, even the ones she lost
7. She accepted defeat so graciously to Obama, and then championed him for the next 8 years. I think that says a lot about character.

(11,594 posts)Your list is great, and I would like to add:
What impresses me so much about Hillary is that she does not seem to accept barriers between herself and others due to her own place on the socioeconomic ladder. She tears them down by listening and then taking on the challenges that others face as though they are her own. This is how Hillary Clinton is able to "evolve." She understands the tensions that exist between etic and emic perspectives--all parts of our society contribute to the well-being of the whole thing (America).
This, and the fact that she never gives in or up are what makes her so wonderful, and would make her an effective POTUS.

The only thing that gives me pause, and it's light years from being a deal killer, is the corporate coziness.
I supported Bernie, but it was NEVER because I was anti-Hillary.

(660 posts)because I know that she is a progressive. She would be happy to sign into law just about every proposal that Sanders supports if those proposals can get through the Congress. She would love to be able to sign a bill calling for Medicare for all (or better). She would love to be able to sign a bill calling for a much higher minimum wage. Clinton and Sanders differ only in what it will take to get as much as will be possible. I know that.

(27,787 posts)One of Obama's greatest strengths has been his ability to stay calm and focused no matter what else is going on.
You can see that same trait in Hillary as well.

(30,058 posts)Rather than making off the wall decisions.
She has been a long time advocate for children on health and education.
She has been an advocate for women, equal pay, violence against women, women's health and their choices.
She has been an advocate for education, health care and many more issues.
She wants to preserve Social Security and make sure it is available to future generations.

(58,785 posts)I'd go find some because I won't in any way support the "lock-her-up" types on either side. I not only don't like and do fear them, after decades of experience I know what they want will turn out to be bad news, sometimes very, very bad.

(1,048 posts)I am not as progressive as I thought I was seeing this election play out. I am center left but not left left. However, I would've supported Sanders had he won the nomination. I live in the DC Beltway and have since the Clinton years. Some say that is a detriment because we are known to be in the "bubble" but I truly believe that Hillary Clinton has evolved from some of her bad policy positions of the past. Is she my perfect candidate? No. There is no such thing. But I respect the work and service she has done over the years. I also think that some of the things she endures is covered with the stench of sexism. I do not buy into the rhetoric and narrative that the right wing has been feeding for the past 20 years on Hillary Clinton. Is there baggage there? Sure. Has she done things I haven't agreed with? Sure. So has Obama. So has every politician I've known.
I support her because I believe she will protect the Obama legacy, a legacy in which I support, and a man I voted for twice and yes...there is even more motivation to not have Donald Trump destroy all of that. People want to put an asterisk on President Obama's presidency and I believe Hillary can expand the work he has done and I believe she will deal with the issue of immigration that was not done when Obama was President and I believe she has the judgment to appoint Supreme Court justices that will not roll us back to the 60s and before.

(4,035 posts)Her views have actually changed since the 1960s because she is willing to listen to people who know more about the issues than she does. She goes out and talks to people, and lets them tell her about their concerns and their possible solutions, and bases her approach to issues on that.
She's a champion of marginalized groups, and has been since she graduated college.
She has withstood harassment the likes of which very few people have endured, and she has done it with grace, and poise, and without becoming bitter.
Squinch
(50,957 posts)the Republicans rip her apart because they know she is good, so she has high unlikeable ratings.
But I think that the performance and people's opinions of her when she is in the job is the important thing.
She fights effectively for low income people, women's rights, civil rights and children's rights. She has always done this, since she was a kid in college, and there have been few time gaps in her work in these areas.
She is the wonkiest of the wonks, and when presented with a problem, she digs very far in to find the best solution. In NY she created a lot of meaningful job projects, she was extremely responsive on state-wide and local environmental issues. When she was Senator, she worked very well with people on both sides of the aisle, even though her name is Clinton and got them to agree on programs for the people she fights for (see above.) None of her programs were vanity. None of them were to get her recognition. They all went to the nitty gritty place where the most good could be done with the leverage she had at that moment.
She has foreign policy chops, and is respected on both sides of the aisle for them.
She's the smartest and most experienced one in any room.
She's a woman and people find her unlikeable and have problems with her clothing and her figure and her bla bla bla, and she just keeps chugging along. I like that.
And, yes, I like that little girls will see her and know that one day they can be President. Totally happy to vote with my hoo ha. I'll shed a lot of happy tears for the history being made at her inauguration.

(11,619 posts)She supports reasonable gun regulation.
She will support supreme court judges like Ginsburg.
She has experience negotiating with our friends, competitors, enemies.
She is incredibly tough, having faced numerous investigations and hate by her opponents.
She doesn'the back down from a challange.
Her voting record and her policies benefit the minotities, the poor, middle class, women and families.
She is the best candidate for President on the Novemverge ballot.

(36,846 posts)I really believe that once she is in the White House she will:
1. Believes in Climate Change and will work to prevent it
2. She believes in the social safety net and will work to preserve social security and medicare and expanding both
3. She believes in a progressive tax system and will support taxing the rich
4. She believes in obamacare (she tried hillarycare remember) and will work to improve it.
5. She believes in gun control
6. She believes in civil rights for all
7. If a progressive congress passes legislation, she is most likely to sign whatever it is - if we ever get this congress

(364 posts)1. She has been the smartest person in the room all the time, but has always had to adjust to practicality and ignorance and bigotry of others. She didn't want to change her last name, but stupid people and a practical mind made her do it.
2. She has no ego. She can think bigger picture, and go beyond herself.
3. She has a cause. Her cause has always been women and children. She really cares.
4. She is not bullied. Ever.
5. She does not lose class. Ever.
6. She is pro-female and feminist in her heart. No one can take that away from her.
7. She is ambitious. But she is patient.
8. In her own words she "blooms where she is planted.". She does not complain. She accepts and makes the best of it.
9. She stands up every time someone pushes her down.
10. She is a fighter.
11. She is real. She is authentic. I know people think the opposite. But I have seen a consistency in her that I've not seen in many others.
12. She is mature. She is the adult in the room.
13. She is crazy smart.
14. She works hard, and learns the subject. She asks questions and comes prepared.
15. She cares about the country.
16. She is a policy work, and a politician who gets things done.

Including strengthening and expanding the Affordable Care Act, higher taxes on the richest and on big corporations, preserving and strengthening Planned Parenthood, sane gun control laws, immigration reform, effectively addressing climate change, reducing inequality, strong on civil rights.
Her record of fighting for these liberal policies is consistent. She has consistently shown she can gain the coalitions at home and abroad to win on these issues. Broad coalitions are necessary for domestic policy to be enacted and for international agreements.
Her actions belie the lazy far right meme that she's not trustworthy and the lazy far left meme that she's not liberal.
She will appoint very competent people to her cabinet, to the Supreme Court and to hundreds of other appointments.

(11,243 posts)I am a pragmatist. I have seen pragmatic centrist achieve amazing results in my purple state. I am farther left than most, but I have been able to work with them as part of an activist group. The GOP would not cross the street to piss on us if we were on fire. Hell, they were the ones who lit us on fire in the first place. There is a HUGE difference between GOP and moderate Dems. I know this up close and personal.
She is also tough. There is no doubt that she is battle-tested. She always lives to fight another day. If Obama couldn't inspire unity and cooperation between the parties, no one can, so I want a fighter this time. We need to grind them down, run out the clock on the Supreme Court nominations.
I liked Obama in the last primary, but I always like Hillary too (except right at the end). Last primary felt like a win/win to me. I didn't realize how ugly many on our own side were about her

(8,758 posts)She's smart and tough. She listens before she decides on a course of action. She is engaged and interested. She has more experience as a representative of America to the world than any other candidate going back to and past Jimmy Carter. She is a solid liberal despite what people say to her. Sure she's a moderate liberal, I'd never saddle her with "progressive", but she's a solid liberal who's never given me to question her liberalism.
Also with Hillary there is a 0% chance of a conservative asshole on the SCOTUS. Hillary will not roll back progress for women or Civil Rights and will help push the envelope in those directions.
I voted for Bernie in the Primary, I have not one problem voting for Hillary in the GE.
