2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI am no longer sitting on the Fence.
I was a Bernie Supporter. I still Like him very much, but I have finally come down off the Fence and I will tell you why.
Three Words: The Supreme Court.
The Next President of the United States will most likely be picking two or three Supreme Court Judges. I sure as HELL don't want that to be Donald Trump. Some where someone posted who his thoughts were for Supreme Court and I have to tell you,... those were some scary dudes!
A friend of mine suggested I vote for Jill Stein. It doesn't matter what people think about her, she Just WILL not have the votes to even win anything.. What maybe 5% or less of the votes? Its like buying a lottery ticket with the numbers 000 00 000 000. Hello? What's the chance that will come up?
So that leaves Hillary. Honestly, I am not comfortable with her, but she is the ONLY one who has a shot at beating Trump. There is no other person who can do that. There will be No BRUCE WAYNE SWEEPING down the walls to save us from that Orange Monster. Trump needs to be a distant memory. I can't even imagine the havoc he would bring down on the American People.
Like who do you think will build his big BEAUTIFUL WALL FOR HIM??
Guess who? Low income Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians! (can you imagine what the pay will be for a day?? HINT: Ask the Chinese Americans what their ancestors got for building the American Rail Roads in the 1800's!!) I really believe that Trump's slogan is wrong. Its should be MAKE AMERICA WHITE AGAIN. David Duke supports him as does the Nazi Party and the KKK. The John Birch Society -The guy...is a monster. (The photo above btw is from the movie MONSTERS and I thought it was appropriate.)
So I am here to tell you.. Something I never thought I would say.. but
Watashi wa kanojo to issho desune
There, I said it.. (deep sigh of relief)... I'm with her

(41,833 posts)do you know, one time a Giants Representative came out to my work place, and we were talking about buying Season tickets package, and he asked me if there was anything else he could throw into the deal. I told him I always wanted a Giants jacket, those things were sweet, (Ran a bit over 100 dollars) and he said, hey no problem, I will deliver one to you, so He asked me my size, and I said a medium. The next day he was back with Jacket, and I sighed the deal, and got my Season tickets. I was thrilled. I had great seats too, on the First base side just behind the end of the dugout. I could get autographs from the opposing teams and sometimes even Giant players if they were practicing on that side, before the game. It was to me, at least the best seat in the house.

(3,825 posts)We are facing a very frightening decision for our country, and this election will have great and devastating consequences should Trump somehow manage to win. Petty party differences are nothing compared to what will await all of us, and that is enough for me. The republican party has become the party of hate.
Just seeing what they did to Obama the past 8 years, and where we could have been had they not blocked nearly everything he wanted to do. Even shutting down the Government for several days, causing a loss of a ton of money! The things he could have done, had they not blocked him.

(26,630 posts)but I don't despair. I think my Democratic party has moved left thanks to the support for Bernie. Too bad it took a party outsider to do it, but it's done, and I think every Democratic candidate for every office will benefit from a campaign that gave us a look at a future to believe in. We're getting there, but first, let's defeat the fascist.

Voting for greens who can't win can or not showing up will only help hand the supreme court to people who are worse than corporate moDUHrates. Sometimes it's a game of inches; It's time to act like grownups and vote for the best choice that we have.

(28,341 posts)I was once a reluctant supporter of PBO, but soon came to appreciate and even genuinely love him. He and Michelle have been such a treasure to our country. Even as I am excited to work for the election of HRC, part of me will still be sad to see PBO go.
It takes time to evolve through these steps. Just be patient and know that you are 1000% about the SCOTUS thing. We just CAN'T have that. The prospect is terrifying.
yuiyoshida
(41,833 posts)But I will not go into why I am uncomfortable with her. Soldiers and Sailors never love a War, but they show up everyday to win one, hopefully without getting killed. You do what you have to do, because its your pledge and duty to do so. I looked long and hard at the options and saw there were none. There had to be an either or choice here. Besides, what would I as an Asian American have in common with a member of the KKK? Nothing.
It begs the question. If Nazi Germany had won the war, how long would it have taken for Hitler to turn on Imperial Japan?? After all, they were not considered by Germany - the Master Race.
The Republican party has no love for me. They would sooner put me on a fast boat to Shanghai than allow me to live in a country I was born in. Am I an Anchor baby? No, my family has been in the US (Hawaii while not a state in 1949, was still American territory.)for three generations. Its not likely I would be sent to Hawaii, even though I have Hawaiian native blood. But to the TRUMP, I am a foreigner. I am on the wrong continent. I need to be shipped to ASIA.
I know Hillary would never even consider that kind of thinking, unless she thinks I need a two week vacation in Hawaii.

(8,217 posts)I have maintained that I will vote for her, and I will, however by no means am I with her.
Matters that have surfaced has made it even harder to say that I will vote for her, and the fact that much of it is being swept under the rug amazes and disgusts me.
See, there are three reasons I will not vote for a Republican.
1 - I do not want to give them legitimacy.
2 - They use religion, xenophobia and race as a means of control. It is safe to assume that this will cause more atrocities within the US.
3 - The Supreme Court, as that is a lifetime position and ramifications of such a thing goes for generations.
There was no possible way that I would vote for the Republican to begin with.
Even if I am unaffiliated once more, I have always maintained that I will only vote for the two main parties, as those are the two only possibilities to begin with. So my only two options has always been either to vote for a Democrat or leave the top ticket blank.
I can help out other point of views so that they may be heard, but that is as far as I would go.
So in the end, all I can say is "I'm with the Local Democrats".
yuiyoshida
(41,833 posts)It only means I will vote for her. That's it..Besides, I live in Blue San Francisco..Even if I didn't vote the state will carry Hillary Clinton. But...I will vote because its my duty to do so, as a citizen of this country, of this state and city. My family have always voted Democratic, even if there were times we had to hold our nose doing it.
The tea party has merged and eaten up the Republican party. Its filled with religious zealots, Bigots, Racists, Gay Bashers, ect. That's the party today. I think not only if Donald Trump is defeated, it may make the Republican party look like the weak party it has become. But again,
there is the Supreme Court. Do we want the to over turn Rhode V Wade? Hell no. Nor any other rights we have been fighting for, for years. It has to stop...it has to start with us.
I just can't say that.
It is very hard for me to do, as at this moment, I am still quite tempted to leave the top ticket blank.
It is just a shame that the only reason I would be voting for a Democrat is due to voting against the Republican.
It is hard, since when projecting what either of the two administrations would effectively be like, they almost balance out to be close to equally negative. It is those three factors that I mentioned that brings her ahead, and that is not even due to any of her virtues.
So as mentioned before, I will keep with the local. I think I mentioned to you my plans for now. I mean, I think it is important as sometimes different methods should be explored. I don't think people would begrudge me for it, I hope.

The only reason to not support 3rd party candidates, or sit out the election. Whatever victories that the Obama Administration had during its 8 year term will be lost for a generation if we do not elect Hillary Clinton. This election will shore up the rulings of the court on Obamacare and gay rights possibly for the next generation. We could possibly end the fights on these issues if the court is reconfigured during the next 8 years. Spread the word! Time to argue is over . . . Let's come together on this one issue if for no other reason. Don't let the right gut the Obama legacy!

A constitutional challenge to Citizens United upheld by the new line-up of the Supreme Court.
Roberts as "Chief" Justice in name only.
Appeals of capital punishment cases resulting one after the other in the staying of executions.
Voting rights restrictions struck down one after the other.
Majority decisions ensuring and enforcing women's rights one after the other.
Curtailments of civil rights struck down one after the other.
ALL social progress goals achievable by legislation--advanced. All strangleholds on civil liberties--struck down.
All levels of society are affected by Supreme Court decisions.
Not everyone cares, but everyone has a good reason to care.
