I was visiting my best friend Michael and his family last night. I consider his kids my grandchildren, though we are not related, so I have been very involved in their upbringing.

When 4-year-old William asks Michael a question that Michael isn't sure of the answer for, he always tells him to ask me when I visit again.

Michael and William watched the convention together last week. As Trump ranted and raged, little William said, "Daddy, that man is red! Why is he so red?"

Last night I explained to William about high blood pressure and how blood rushes to the face when someone gets so excited--the more excited, the more blood rush--and that if the excited person has high blood pressure, the face gets even redder.

Michael said he was glad he had waited for my answer, because he had assumed it was from too much sun, or even from a tanning bed. I pointed out that Trump always has a baseline of orangish red, but that William had never commented on it because it is, though excessive, not outside of what would be considered to be within normal range.

But while he ranted on Thursday night, Trump got himself so worked up that his redness was amped up to an extraordinary level, to the point where even a 4-year-old child was freaked out by it and recognized it is way beyond normal range.

And that’s because that’s how they learn. And they learn a hell of a lot when they're young. They are excellent at spotting discrepancies.
