Oakland mother of slain U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens tells Donald Trump to stop using her son's nameOAKLAND -- The mother of U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, who was killed during the 2012 attack in Benghazi, wants Donald Trump's campaign and the Republican Party to stop using her son's name.
Mary F. Commanday, of Oakland, wrote a letter published by The New York Times on Friday pleading with the Republican presidential nominee to refrain from using her son's name during his campaign.
Commanday said she was motivated to write the letter to the editor because she didn't want to hear her son's name and reputation connected with Trump's campaign.
"I wrote it because I felt that Chris' name shouldn't be involved with that whole campaign," Commanday said from her home Saturday evening. "It's happened before ... I decided enough was enough, and I didn't want to see that happen anymore."

(5,106 posts)Not having had (thankfully thus far if ever) the kind of loss suffered by Benghazi mom, Pat Smith, my reaction to her RNC speech was mainly fury at the Trump campaign. I could understand her being stuck at the anger level of grief, but blaming Hillary Clinton in such an unhinged way was hugely exploitive. Having had a brother and several friends at risk in Viet Nam, and, again, thankfully, only a few former students in Iraq/Afghanistan, who came home PHYSICALLY intact, I don't have much room to speak. BUT this issue should never be exploited for political"gotcha." I am SO tired of hearing about Benghazi, considering the statistics regarding embassy deaths in general over the years. There have been legitimate issues with the Clintons for sure, but having now reached the level of considering an ignorant razzle/dazzle showman as a legitimate presidential candidate, the Twilight Zone has truly been reached.

To the Editor:
As Ambassador J. Christopher Stevenss mother, I am writing to object to any mention of his name and death in Benghazi, Libya, by Donald Trumps campaign and the Republican Party.
I know for certain that Chris would not have wanted his name or memory used in that connection. I hope that there will be an immediate and permanent stop to this opportunistic and cynical use by the campaign.
