Six Ways Clinton’s VP Pick Resembles Pope Francis

Last edited Sun Jul 24, 2016, 02:34 AM - Edit history (1)

I'm really enjoying this media coverage. Trump's speech woke up America to just how horrible the TP ticket is. Hillary's pick brought light back into the most psychotic week in American politics. And now this, comparisons to the Pope. Excuse me while I LOL at the soiled TP guys just getting flushed.

I must add, Kaine is way ahead of Pope Francis on many issues. The Pope is more conservative. Nonetheless, the comparison is welcome while TP is rolling out insults and lies.

Tim Kaine is a "Pope Francis Catholic" with a history of social justice work

6 Ways That Hillary Clinton’s Vice President Pick Resembles Pope Francis

... the former governor and current senator from Virginia isn’t your run-of-the-mill moderate. In fact, he’s the closest thing to an American Pope Francis. Much like Secretary Clinton, he attributes his political activism to his deeply rooted religious values. His Catholic identity might make the secular far left unenthusiastic, but perhaps he’ll capture some of the “Francis effect.” Here’s why.

1. Jesuit missionary in Honduras

The obvious connection between Kaine and the Bishop of Rome is their shared Jesuit work in Latin America. Kaine left Harvard Law School to work with missionaries running a school in Honduras ......

that will resonate heavily among those in PA and OH. It's going to be interesting to see how the polls move after his DNC speech and the debates!

Central America was a dangerous place when Kaine was there, and missionaries were favorite targets of right wing dictators.

Honduras was also where Reagan's Contra army hid out safe from attack while making incursions into Nicaragua to kill Americans like Ben Linder and destabilize the government.
I really relate to the profound life change he talks about after my 3 years in Latin America with Spanish fluency. Without the fluency, you can't acculturate or develop understanding of local reality with a distinct view of the United States.

I was also in the Central America war zone during Reagan's term. Bush was in Honduras while I was there. He was handing off 100 million dollars to the Honduran President to support the Contras, treasonously circumventing the Boland amendment while the U.S. was focused on the space shuttle Challenger launch. A few days later I was stabbed nine times. A year later, fellow Portlander Ben Linder was shot in the temple at close range, assassinated during Iran-Contra. Then the Jesuits. Before I went down to investigate the situation and write about it, American journalist Linda Frazier and others were killed in the botched assassination attempt on the non-Reagan Contra faction leader, Edén Pastora. Tens of thousands died in Central Amerrica, I barely survived myself and I was just passing through heading to Bolivia. Little surprise to me Kaine woke.

We don't need Republican terrorists like Reagan or a Bush in the White House ever again, far less a Trump.

a few years later, in conjunction with the comunidades bases (base community) movement and in developing mission churches. I was based in S. Texas and Mexico, where we received some of the refugees. The memory of the stories they had to tell still makes my blood run cold.

Sounds like you did some really good work. I'm glad you're still with us.

for the Reagan-termed "Sandinista terrorists" to arrive at the Texas border.
If St. Ronnie was always right, they should be there soon.

Killing leftist everywhere in Latin America by the tens of thousands, what a switch after Carter's focus on human rights.

Many of the dead were't even political. They were murdered to eliminate witnesses.

Meet Tim Kaine’s wife, a longtime child welfare advocate and Virginia’s secretary of education

In tapping Sen. Timothy M. Kaine (D-Va.) as her running mate, Hillary Clinton didn’t just choose the popular former governor of a purple state that she hopes will turn out for Democrats in November. She also chose one half of a Virginia power couple with a history of public service and advocacy on issues related to child welfare and education.

As governor, Kaine championed early childhood education, a cornerstone of Clinton’s education platform, and pushed for more money to support public preschool. ......

But Anne Holton, his wife — who serves as Virginia’s secretary of education — has an even more extensive record when it comes to advocating for children, particularly foster youth.
