The Lucifer thing really got my goat. Not because I thought it was over the line; in essence comparing your political opponent to the Devil. You can hear that on talk radio all day long.
That is not what concerned me the most. The really scary thing:
Most of the people in that arena truly believe in Lucifer. They think there is this really bad spirit dude who is tempting each of us and some people not only give in to temptation, but 'join' his team. And the groups they think have joined Lucifer's team keeps getting larger. LGBT, Feminist, Democrats, Pro-choice folks and the list goes on. And since they think we are allies with the devil, we are witnessing the de-humanizing of all of us. They are not close to needing a final solution for us, far from it. But we cannot give them time.
We have to win this election or things are going to get ugly.
If you had told me 2 weeks ago I would post something like this I would have cussed at you. I am not that many years removed from being a republican, but what we are seeing now is just crazy. Carson was not using hyperbole. He truly believes Hillary, and all of her supporters, are aligned with the Devil. And lots of folks in that hall totally agree.
God, I wish Walter Cronkite was alive today. He would call this shit for what it is.

Calling out Trump and Carson for their... I do not even know what to call it. He would have eviscerated them.

Murrow, by contrast, Actually called out Joe McCarthy while McCarthy was at the height of his influence.. Now THAT took stones! 😏

(11,949 posts)But man, Morrow was before my time. I would totally LMAO to see a reporter come on the air, smoking a cig, and tell the nation that Trump was full of shit. Which Morrow would have done.
I am not encouraging smoking here. It took me forever to quit. But can you imagine the image of a slim man in a super stylish suit telling the nation the truth about Trump. 60 years ago that would have happened.

(4,451 posts)If you look on Trump Twitter you will see.... Some people are saying they are voting for Trump to stop the end times from coming. They're talking "rapture" and all kinds of stuff. They are referencing the marriage equality court decision as proof that it os coming... It's insane.

(23 posts)All of my in-laws and several friends have become "born again" and they absolutely believe in Lucifer. I knew that the in-laws had been going off the rails for some time now, but the real kicker came on Halloween a couple of years ago. My mother-in-law called to chat and I told her I had to get off the phone because I had trick or treaters at the door. She proceeded to tell me that I was wrong to celebrate this holiday because it was satanic. She mentioned something about "people being sacrificed tonight." Honestly, I thought I was going to fall off my chair.
I try to be tolerant of all religions because I don't think it's for any of us to judge. People can believe (or not believe) whatever they want. But when the Ben Carsons of the world want to change our laws to reflect his particular religious beliefs, well, that's where I have a serious problem.
To add insult to injury, the in-laws don't really believe I'm a Christian because I'm just a Catholic and I haven't been born again. Boggles the mind.

(11,949 posts)I actually know a family where a Catholic marring a Lutheran caused a family crisis. Crazy as that sounds.

(23 posts)My husband I are on the same page. We both think they're nuts. I tend to deal with it by letting them run off about their "ministering" activities and then subtly changing the subject. My husband deals with it by rarely talking to his mother. They also live in a different area of the country so we don't see them very often.
The last time they visited, I mentioned that a mutual acquaintance was getting a divorce. Mom-in-law said that she doesn't believe in divorce. This rendered me speechless since she is, in fact, divorced, and is now married to her second husband (who really is a wonderful man). When she saw my expression, she explained that this was okay because that was before she became born again. Meanwhile, my hubby and I have been married for over 30 years, which is longer than she has been married. I just always get the feeling that none of these facts matter in her world. It's like I'm "less than" by virtue of my non-born again status. As a result, I'm always a bit guarded in what I say. It's too bad, really, because in many ways she is a very giving, caring person.

(11,949 posts)People are complicated. I long ago realize that we all have good and bad traits. And on a personal, family basis we just learn to get along.
But when national politicians use religion to divide us, I start getting pissed.
I have not stated it in this thread because it really does not matter, but I am a liberal Christian.
Have a great evening.

GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)That is a term best used to describe a few mentally unstable people in society.
These folks are a definite minority, but not a small one. I would guess 15-20% of the population. They know nothing of science and distrust the very name of science. Their only real education has been evangelical propaganda. And that evangelical propaganda has been so mixed up with racism and misogyny over the last 300 years that the lines blur.
And many of them think we are entering the end time. They think this, of course, because they are seeing that a majority of Americans think they are bat shit crazy and reject their theology.
They will not go silently into the night...to quote an awful movie!
