2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIt took a while, but I am all in for Clinton
How anyone could watch a nano second of that convention and vote for any of those people defies all logic and reason. They are inciting hate and divisiveness. They have nothing to offer people but hate and pain. It's difficult to believe we are in America right now. I bet a lot of us Bernie supporters are going to come to the same realization. Trump is dangerous and cannot be allowed anywhere near 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

(5,737 posts)White hate on full display. Remember the 2008 campaign when McCain was in WI (I think) and the guy was foaming at the mouth screaming about taking "our" country back? Multiply that by 100 and that is what we are seeing in Cleveland. no substance, just pure hatred. Bu we ain't seen nothing yet, to borrow a line from an old song. As the election gets closer, what we see now will be multiplied by 1000.

Must be a half dozen people I've met who admitted that know nothing about her record, and just didn't want to "listen". People seem to be brainwashed into thinking that their ears will bleed, or it will feel like Mommy is yelling at them.

(32,863 posts)I was completely wrong. I forced myself to watch the republican convention for the last two days and I came to the realization that trump and his ilk are an actual danger to America.
Take it for what it's worth, I don't care about the Hillary supporters who still want to divide us because we didn't see the light earlier.

(30,481 posts)I am a big Clinton supporter who also understands the serious concerns people bing to the table about her as President. At the same time, this election really is different than past elections. McCain and Romney were no Trump. Trump is truly filled with hate and wants those he hates to pay a price.

(31,849 posts)should go full Godwin ... showing the lock her uppers, next to the z-heilers, trumps calls for violently ejecting protesters from his rallies, next to bull conners' stuff, and shots of Jewish people and Gypsies being herded toward the trains and in concentration camps every other screen with pictures of trump and voice overs of him talking.
Tag line: "Is this what making America great looks like? He seems to think so. Tell him he is wrong, vote HRC."
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)restrained enough so people feel they can discuss instead of condemning, and full Godwin for others. Those revelatory scenes in the convention should be an effective launch pad.

Second I was a Sanders supporter from early on and voted for him in the primary, and when it became obvious that HRC was going to be the nominee, I had no problem whatever changing my support to her. I don't buy into any of the HRC=criminal bullshit and never have.
Third, I don't need to subject myself to the RNC shit-show to understand how horrible any and all of them are. I'm surrounded by these Neanderthals, where I live.

(95,337 posts)I would have to be so fricking selfish that it wouldn't matter how women, minorities and LGBTQ citizens will suffer with Trump as President. I would have to be a selfish prick and say that the only thing matters is ME. It matters that I have this set of issues that I support and if someone doesn't match it 100% then fuck it, I'll go vote 3rd party to find someone who comes closer to that match.
I won't care that under a Trump Presidency it won't make much of a difference with my life. I have a decent job, some savings and a fixed-rate mortgage. I'm past child-bearing years and done with my education so won't matter about that either. I would essentially have to say 'Fuck all of you it's about me'.
Well I can't think about my vote that way.
I think of everyone. And I realize that things won't be perfect under Hillary Clinton and I would suspect a few times she might even piss me off with what she does as President. But statically speaking I agree with Hillary Clinton anywhere from 85%-90% of the issues where she stands. It will be a far cry easier protesting that 10-15% where we don't agree then fighting ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, which would be a Trump Presidency.
And those Supreme Court Nominations are LIFETIME appointments. God forbid another Thomas or Scalia gets on the bench, one that is 50 years old. Your children and grandchildren will have to live with the decisions passed by that Supreme Court. Are my sensitive feelings about the few issues I disagree with Hillary Clinton that much more important that the civil rights of future generations? Hell no.
Hillary Clinton would not run the country by herself. So we can fight to get a better congress to help shape that future.

Who knows how long RBG will be around. 2 lifetime appts by Pence (that's who will do it) take a look at his record/views on LGBT, women, etc. I counldn't even imagine...
While Clinton/Dems may not be perfect on the environment, that shithead Trump took a helicopter like 1300 feet today (not sure exactly but it was walking distance) AFTER arriving on his giant plane. This is who he is. Anyone concerned about the environment who thinks Trump might not be as bad as Clinton...loses their credibility & the right to complain. Period.

(23,690 posts)have gotten has been mostly positive. Bill's work with his foundation, HRC as NY Senator and SOS. It was only when the talk began about her running for president did all the hateful stuff start being yelled from the mountain tops. Then there were the Benghazi hearings, then the email investigations, which of course dredged up all the propaganda crap from the nineties.
So any one born say since the mid 80's are really hearing this stuff for the first time. When you don't know the back stories, and you hear Hillary is a crook, Hillary lied, etc over and over again, you begin to think it's true.
Those of us around then to see what they did to both Bill and HRC in the 90's know this is just the RW crap machine cranked up to 1000.

(3,275 posts)but I liked both Sanders and Clinton. I knew both of them were 1,000,000 times better than any of the 17 republicans that ran. If Sanders had won, I would have worked very hard for him to win. I will work until November to get Clinton elected. I want this to be a landslide that humiliates both Trump. He is truly a despicable creature.

(23,690 posts)Regardless of whether you supported a winning candidate or a losing candidate, do not prolong the agony of the last Democratic presidential primary by continuing to pick fights, place blame, tear down former primary candidates, bait former supporters, or do anything else to pour salt on old wounds.
Why we have this rule: Most of our members want this to be forward-looking, friendly community that is focused on creating a better future for our country. Continuing to rehash old fights that have already been resolved is divisive and counter-productive.
Just a heads up. We have moved on from the primaries. Bernie accomplished a lot and yes he did move the party platform more to the left. But we have a bigger fight to focus on now.

(3,702 posts)We are a major player on the international stage - militarily, economically, culturally, etc. Just because many Americans don't pay attention to global affairs doesn't mean the rest of the world is as oblivious.
I seriously believe Trump being elected (no way he would actually serve his full term - he doesn't have the attention span) would have major impacts on the world financial markets, our credit rating, hell even our credibility is going to take a nose dive.
How the hell would we be able to negotiate trade deals after all the xenophobic rhetoric? Even if Trump stepped down the next day, the damage would be done. It's one thing to be a narcissistic egomaniac, its another thing to have a country full of people that vote for him.
I understand that there are people who hate Clinton and are tearing their hair out, comparing her to Trump and vowing to vote for anyone but her "to send a message". Well that message isn't really going to be seen to be about Clinton. If Trump wins (shudder) - the rest of the world won't be saying "See the American people have voted and they reject Clinton and her policies" - nope they are going to be saying "WTF, the American people support and approve of Trump and all he stands for"
