2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe fun thing about the debates, if they ever happen,
is that Trump won't be able to rely on a teleprompter.
So his rambling, insanely narcissistic mode of thinking will be on full display.
Unless, of course, they outfit him with an earpiece . . . but I think his ego won't allow for that.

(751 posts)And that didn't hurt him. What makes you think debate with Hillary would hurt him?
I think Clinton is actually good debator, but Trump is a real wildcard. GOPers were really tough on him and they were throwing under the belt ("small hand" , and he came through it.

(108,994 posts)And she had many back-to-back town halls with Bernie as well.
His primary opponents weren't tough on him because they didn't want to burn any bridges with him. Hillary won't care. She'll have no reason to pull any punches.
Plus, she's smarter than any of them. Instead of fighting on his terms, she'll know how to get under his skin in a subtle way -- that brings out the worst in him.

(7,584 posts)Hillary will stand up to the asshat and let him have it. and I thought they were not supposed to wear ear pieces for a debate. besides when dumdum starts ranting..he is not going to listen to anyone else.

(58,785 posts)really scared about the debates. Whether they coach (and wire?) him or let him go out and attack in his own style, it's not going to be good for him. They'd have to drug him to keep Hillary from setting him off.
Kcjohn seems to have forgotten the GOP primary. This will be entirely different for Trump than the primary debates, when everyone was afraid he'd run independently if he was offended. And even then, handled with kid gloves, he did very bad. Almost silent most of the time, even skipped one debate entirely, but it didn't matter only because cable TV turned over long hours to airing him in interviews and on stage by himself.

(43,049 posts)so that's not necessarily a bad thing for him.
Now, he beat a dozen largely useless Republicans in Republican primaries who had no idea how to counter his bombast. We really have no idea how he will do when he meets Hillary, who has been through worse herself, and will be well trained to deal with the big mouth.
Will his "refreshing" bullshit carry the day with the larger population? Will Hillary calmly just correcting his "errors" drive him up a wall and cause a meltdown?
It will be interesting.

(108,994 posts)Once they did, they were afraid to burn any bridges with him by opposing him too fiercely.
Hillary won't be held back by these concerns.

(43,049 posts)This year I've noticed yet more annoyance with traditional politics and it's tougher to get people out.
Around here, Bernie got the lefties out and Trump seems to attract the more rightwing disaffected. I have little doubt Hillary would annihilate him in a just world, but the simple fact that he got this far means something is happening that we probably don't fully understand.
As I said, it will be interesting.

Donald Trump has given hundreds, perhaps thousands of speeches and says a lot of things, but something about his meandering word slurry of an address Wednesday night in Cincinnati felt like a departure even by Trumpian rhetorical standards. The Donald was uncommonly loose, unbuttoned to the point of intoxication, as he ticked off his normal stump talking points while veering into variety show-style mimicry that surpassed his previous speeches not in venom, but in stagecraft.

(2,434 posts)ask the questions and press him for details - like what is NOT great about America and exactly what could he change. and how.
That said, his "debates" in the primary were not one on one and there was very little substance. It got way too into personalities and there were too many targets. The audience will tire of lying Hillary, crooked Hillary and he will be forced to come up w/ something new.
