Ohio Gov. John Kasich's office tells The Daily Beast he cannot ban open carry of firearms at the Republican convention in Cleveland. "Law enforcement is a noble, essential calling and we all grieve that we've again seen attacks on officers," spokeswoman Emmalee Kalmbach said in a statement. "Ohio governors do not have the power to arbitrarily suspend federal and state constitutional rights or state laws as suggested." Hours earlier, the president of the Cleveland police union asked Kasich to ban all open carrying of weapons in Cuyahoga County after six police officers were shot in Baton Rouge on Sunday morning, three of them fatally.

(364 posts)I mean - if it's a constitutional right, how can it be banned for a couple of days, based on my convenience or my specific fear? I know what they should do - they should have more good police with guns to destroy the bad people with guns.
Or they can basically have more gun regulation and control, have laws to prevent bad people from buying guns, get rid of open carry and assault rifles, and generally make it safe for everyone - not just the police and people around RNC for a couple of days.

(24,437 posts)Isn't that the sort of "Tyranny" that the right is forever accusing Obama of- even though he hasn't done anything of the sort? Glad to hear that Kasich isn't going along with it (but Republicans- those lovers of "freedom" and "opposers of tyranny"- would have gone after him if he had, right? Right?)

(1,474 posts)I assumed the police union was recommending that open carry be banned in the environs around the convention, and that would be fully impossible for reasons Kasich states.
I hate him, but if I understand this situation, he's factually correct, no matter how evil and wrong in general.

(2,577 posts)Those are the rules set by the Secret Service. Outside that area where the protestors gather, there are many restrictions, but open carry is permitted. So no tennis balls or metal tipped umbrellas, but the AR-15 is fine.
This situation is brought to you by a gerrymandered Republican legislature in Ohio that has worked overtime to make guns more accessible to Ohio's citizens, while allowing education, public health, and job growth die on the vine.
Republican delegates will be bringing their weapons, but not to the floor of the convention. They WILL be carrying when they go out to enjoy the region's bars until 4:00 am. I'm sure all will be just fine.

(49,445 posts)...were against issuing concealed-carry permits. Some people are driven to the fainting couch by the idea that non-police might be carrying guns in their vicinity. Then they got all Maude Flanders when people began carrying openly.
One DUer even advocated for calling the cops every time someone was spied open-carrying, and another said that restaurant patrons should immediate and quickly vacate (without paying) if someone open-carrying walked in.
I am a person that thinks open-carry should be illegal within city limits, but that concealed-carry penis should be reasonably easy to get.
Out of sight, out of mind.
Ah well, if Bush was going to the convention, they could declare it special security zone or something. Seems the GOP managed to flub this process so badly the Bush is as ashamed of the GOP as the GOP is ashamed of him!
