2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI stand with the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court
Justice Ginsberg is a stalwart and a national treasure. She is an impeccable jurist with a devotion social justice and a brilliant and tenacious mind. She does not give up and she has seen her efforts and positions vindicated over time.
And she was absolutely right in her criticisms of Trump and even more in the right when she refused to back down after his pathetic little tweet. He tweets, she crafts legal arguments that have advanced the rights of women, minorities and persons of the LGBT community probably more than any other individual of the past 50 years.
She was right to raise the warning flag against trump's candidacy. She knew there would be public push back and she, as always, made the reasoned decision. At the right moment she said the right thing.
Trump has already attacked the judiciary, signaling that a trump administration could be a very real threat to our function of government, our separation of powers. We've seen despots and demoguages rise to power and begin by attacking the judges. "The first thing we do, we kill all the lawyers."
Trump crosses lines regularly. He's a megalomaniac and gets a little tiny hard on from doing so. But the lines he crosses are necessary lines. We can leave nothing to chance. Everyone in a position to make the media listen should be sounding the alarms.
Thank you Justice Ginsberg.

(6,716 posts)with the author of "The Honorable RBG" on tonight's show. It was very informative and gave great insight as to why she said what she did. Essentially knowing Trump would dismantle the court...

I stand with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
I thought it made complete sense and I stand with her as well.
All of the vapors over this makes me sick. What about the justices who were hanging out with donors, right wing politicians, bashing Obama, etc. Oh, that's right...it's only okay if you're a Republican.

(1,499 posts)That the now-deceased Antonin Scalia gave literally dozens, if not hundreds, of political speeches and NO ONE SAID A THING.
Ginsburg makes a couple of quips about a psychotic charlatan and we see "Democrats" talking about recusal.
WTF?

(2,493 posts)The only people supporting her statements are a few folks who don't care that this is a black eye for the Supreme Court. Both the NY Times and Washington Post editorial boards say she made a mistake, as do numerous folks who follow the court. I haven't seen a single reputable news source defend what she said. She simply provided a talking point for Trump and fodder for those who question the legitimacy of the Supreme Court. The court should be the most apolitical entity in this country.

(18,115 posts)This is no black eye for the court. Ginsberg is an able and serious jurist.
No one operates under the illusion that the Court is apolitical. It is where all politics eventually converge. Everything about it is political, as it should be.
If Justice Ginsberg sees it necessary to share her opinion again, I trust she will.

(2,493 posts)Supports her actions. She made a mistake that hopefully won't be repeated.
On edit, here's the latest from the Post again saying she made a mistake and rejecting the arguments I've seen here. https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/07/13/the-ginsburg-counterarguments/?hpid=hp_hp-cards_mhp-card-posteverything%3Ahomepage%2Fcard

And your statement: "No one operates under the illusion that the Court is apolitical. It is where all politics eventually converge. Everything about it is political, as it should be." is exactly on target.

I stand with Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and I appreciate her honesty and applaud her courage to speak up.
Yes it should, but has not been so since the Raygun administration.
"...Reputable news source..." We're you actually able to type that with a straight face?
