Here is why: The Republican Nominee often gets a "bounce" right after the convention because they get a week long news cycle all to themselves.
If we disrupt that news cycle with a bombshell, like Bernie's endorsement and two days later the VP announcement, that's a one two punch that will destroy any potential bump the RNC could provide via the convention.
Then, a week later, we get to have the Democratic convention.

I think an endorsement prior to the Republican convention would provide a demonstration of unity and a remarkable contrast to their circus of hate and self-hatred. Timing the endorsement prior to, and perhaps an event in the middle of their pathetic little parade would gain a great deal of media coverage, and go quite far to negate any "bounce" traditionally expected from their convention.
I like the idea of announcing a veep in the day or two following the R convention.
