Related: About this forumAP: Julian Castro says he isn't being vetted as a potential running mate
"U.S. Housing Secretary Julian Castro said Friday he isn't being vetted as a potential running mate for Democrat Hillary Clinton and continued to maintain that he is unlikely to be offered the job.
But the 41-year-old rising star among Democrats wouldn't say one way or the other whether he would accept if Clinton asked him to join the ticket as her vice presidential candidate.
"I'm not going to get into that. Number one, I've said for a long time, I don't believe that's going to happen," Castro said. "This is a decision that she's going to make and I'm going to be happy to support whatever the ticket is."

(6,835 posts)he needs a bit more seasoning, and being a VP might be a great place to get it. He could make the GOP spend money in Texas that they wouldn't otherwise spend, being that TExas is usually a deep red state.
Another good choice would be Sherrod Brown, good progressive background, comes from a swing state.

(20,214 posts)To me, Julian just isn't there yet. I like Sherrod Brown, but like Warren, I'd hate to lose him in the Senate. Massachusetts has a special election after a senator doesn't finish their term, so I would prefer Warren over Brown. Ohio just goes with a gubernatorial appointment (by Kasich - yikes!).

(20,214 posts)I just think heeds more experience running something big. HUD is fine but he's only been there 2 years. Assuming the Dems are victorious in November, he could stay on with HUD for another 4 to 8 years. I would still like to see him hold elective office again before jumping to the VP spot.

(1,999 posts)He needs to raise his profile in-state in the short term before running statewide.

(20,214 posts)Lloyd Dogget (D) will be 70 in October, so he may be ready to retire in the next few years. Two of the others are Repubs. One is older (Lamar Smith) and has been in Congress for 30 years, so he might be ripe for replacement too.
Senator John Cornyn is only 64 but he may be ready to take a lucrative lobbyist position before retiring altogether. He's up for reelection in 2020.
Then there's Lt Governor (certified loony toon and state embarrasment) Dan Patrick who is 66 and up for reelection in 2018.
I just think a state senator seat would be a big step backward for Julian. But it's really kind of part time in hours and pay, so if he could do something in addition that would be good for his political career it might be okay.

(145,554 posts)There are a number of leaders still hopling that Julian Castro will be the nominee. I personasly doubt that Castro will be the nominee. Senator Warren makes more sense given Sanders behavior
