To the People of the United States of America,

On Tuesday you will have a clear choice, a choice that will define your future. Ireland looks to America with hope, with a sense that our future is intertwined as much as our common past.

Generations of our people have flocked to and shaped your land in the hope of a better future, in the hope of a better life, for the promise of better things to come. You are that shining city on a hill, a place where anybody can make it if they try. America has given so much to us and the world; your culture, your science, your technology and your lives for the betterment of all.

It can be said that this is a defining moment. History teaches us that when a people or a nation is tested, they either rise to the challenge before them or simply fail. The 21st Century holds great promise; in education, in technology, in peace and prosperity but only if it’s done right, only if we can rise to the test and learn from the past. Our problems; and they are many, can only begin to be solved with the right leadership, the right vision, the right heart and with a unity towards a common purpose. As the saying goes, ‘United we stand, divided we fall’. It is not a time for tribal politics whose divisions blind us to the confines of ‘Liberal or Conservative’, ‘Black or White’, ‘Rich or Poor’.

It is somewhat disturbing to see your nations’ politics succumb to the interests of the very rich and powerful, to see a bitter campaign which promotes the worst in all of you. The hatred and vitriol out there is unbecoming of America. Is this what you want for your future, for your children’s future?

In 2008, you elected Barack Obama as leader. He came with a promise of hope and of change. His very life is a testament to that, to what is possible, to what can be achieved by anyone who will try, regardless of who they are. At your hour of need he pulled you back from the abyss. He restored your nations’ promise in the eyes of the world. But he is just one man. His promise of change can only happen when you all work together. Sadly, the corrupting influences of big money, of special interests and lobbyists have worked against him and against you every step of the way. The pollution of politics and media, the divisive tactics and sidestepping of the greater good inhibits your president in his task a great deal.

As you fly out of the storm of the last few years, Mitt Romney would seek to turn you around and fly you back in; with the same policies, the same top-down formula, the same things which got you into the mess in the first place. It only works for the 1% and everyone else is left to pick up the pieces.

We do not seek to preach to you or to tell you how to vote, merely to point out to you that America’s future is in your hands.

If you cannot listen to the words and the story of Obama, if you cannot see through the falseness of Mitt Romney and his backers, if you cannot learn the lessons of the recent past, then you leave your future open to the lessons of history. Ireland, Europe and the wider world look to you with great hope on Tuesday.

Our advice is to vote for Obama. Do it for your country. Work with him and see your nation thrive again. Focus on our common humanity and our common goals for they vastly outweigh that which divides us.

Live up to your country’s name and be the United States of America.

May God bless you all. Go raibh maith agat.
