(62 posts)I don't understand the hand wringing and "cup half empty" attitude as I don't understand what it accomplishes, other than making you more depressed. Maybe "understand" is the wrong word because I do understand it--I often get that way about things that are important to me in the mistaken thought that it will be less painful of a let down if my worst fears come true. However fearing the worst doesn't make it any less painful should the worst come to pass, it just makes me miserable before AND after.
Anyway, of course it's not like 2008. In 2008 Barack Obama made history. There was a lot of enthusiasm in the energy he brought and the idea of America having it's first black President. A lot of idealism and "feel good". Now we've got a more mature candidate, not the idealistic candidate we all thought would build some sort of utopian society. But that doesn't mean Obama isn't going to win again any more than it means once you get over the high of your honeymoon you'll divorce your spouse. If anything it's a much more realistic support of Obama that's happening.
Finally, I've known many of my friends who voted for McCain in 2008 that simply CANNOT stand Romney and will not vote for him. Some are actually voting for Obama, others for Gary Johnson.

(489 posts)The 15,000 people standing in the cold for hours Sunday in front of the NH state capitol, waiting to hear from President Clinton and President Obama, seemed pretty fired up and ready to go.
Of course, that's just a bit of anecdotal evidence from a state that the Romney campaign internals say will be going bright red for Willard.

(19,458 posts)The signs were hard to get this time, and for someone to put up a sign then take it down because of "libya' is kinda bullshit.
They were Obama fans who watch fox news??? because it was ONLY the RW sources that tried to turn it into a conspiracy. Of course, if your stupid ass friends haven't voted yet, you might want to clue them in that the CIA has blown those RW lies right open.
No one would take down a sign and suddenly vote for Robme because of that...

(3,003 posts)...first off, in 2008 we were comfortably ahead (and were for pretty much all of the campaign). We were ecstatic because the Bush-Cheney Era was coming to an end and we knew that we would soon have a Democratic President and a Democratic president in D.C.. However, this euphoria was tinged with apprehension and concern...our country was in crisis. Our economy had collapsed in Sept. 2008 was in a total freefall, with 750,000 jobs being lost every single month. The downturn continued well into Obama's first year in office.
Since our victory in 2008, we Democrats have been under a lot of pressure to "right the ship" from the public and under constant outrageous attacks from the tea party and those on the far right. Given how difficult things were in America during 2009-10 because of the economy, the hateful rhetoric from the tea-baggers resonated with the American people and we lost the House along with six seats in the Senate in the 2010 midterm elections.
Now, as the economy slowly but steadily improves, people are giving Obama a second look. Yes, the deficit has soared, but that happens anytime there is a major crisis such as a war or an economic collapse. However, Obama's accomplishments are quite notable: health care reform (upheld by the Supreme Court, ha-ha!), bin Laden is dead, ZERO terrorist attacks in the homeland, and 2+ years of positive private-sector job growth.
So no, it's hard to feel "euphoric" when we've been working so damn hard at trying to get America moving again, but that burden comes with the responsibility of governing. Tomorrow night we will feel a great sense of euphoria when we are vindicated for all of our hard work the past four years in the face of extreme adversity.

(3,191 posts)I have many anecdotes such as yours. People I know who voted for Obama in 2008 but aren't in 2010. But, the truth is 2008 was very unusual for Indiana to go blue and NC is generally very conservative and has similar racial issues. Some of the people I know voted for Obama in 2008 and I was shocked, mostly repubs or dinos! So, we are just swinging back to normal a bit. I still think we will win decisively but it won't be 2008-which was a HUGE win over McCain. Take care!

Romney winning the election is within the realm of reasonable possibility. But it's not likely. Chill out, get some sleep, and go vote tomorrow if you haven't already.
