Shasta (not Shashta) is a red county and maybe not a good Sanders county. PufPuf23 Jun 2016 #15

But it was way busier than normal.

The first two hours they were open, they processed 50 voters. That's a lot for early morning in my precinct.

Turnout is in line with 2012 and is average (not low) for Primary. There are lot of mail-in ballots in CA.

Are you posting because you are concerned about voter suppression?

The important historic industries of Shasta county are mining, ranching, and timber. Recreation, retail, and equity refugees into a mild winter climate have become ever more important in the past 25 years.

Shasta county is a transportation, retail, educational, and medical hub for more rural adjacent counties. The adjacent more rural counties have a larger proportion of liberals from the 60s and 70s but they also are a minority among a more conservative population.

The only four year college is a small Christian school. There is a two year community college and satellite classes from Chico State University.

The local youth go to four year university elsewhere so there is not a strong politically active youth community compared to elsewhere in California.

Shasta county is the sort of place where GWB was popular.

There are many conservative Christians in Shasta county.

Shasta county a majority GOP; Trump, the Tea Party, and Palin are more popular than most places.

The retired and older professional Democrats are more conservative and more likely to vote Clinton than Sanders.

I love camping and hiking up that way.

But, yeah, it's definitely rural. The county went for Romney 2-1 and McCain.

Not sure why a sparsely populated, heavily Republican area is drawing multiple post attention.

My prediction looks correct if not Democratic friendly so far.

Hillary Clinton has more votes than Sanders in Shasta county.

Trump has more votes than Clinton and Sanders in total in Shasta county.

Surrounding the more rural (than Shasta albeit also a rural county) counties of Trinity, Siskiyou, Modoc, Lassen, and Plumas all are (so far) Sanders over Clinton.

Sanders is doing better than Clinton in Trinity, Siskiyou, Modoc, Lassen, and Plumas counties but Trump leads both individually in votes in all five counties and leads Clinton and Sanders in total in Siskiyou, Modoc, Lassen, and Shasta.

What I forgot to mention was that the OP mentioned race as a reason for labeling Shasta county "Bernie country" when, while race is primarily white, Shasta county is not Sanders country. There are minority populations of Hmong and Native Americans in Shasta county.
