2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumShe may have won, but why would anyone other than billionaires be happy about it?
We had a chance to be a party of the people, instead of the rich...will we ever have that chance again?
And was preserving the status quo in the party and the country worth being this arrogant and heavy-handed about it?
Was it worth relentlessly accusing a good man of a flaw(indifference to bigotry)that everyone knows he doesn't have, that with his family background he simply could not have had?
This won't help women in any meaningful way and it won't lead to the changes we need.
It's a victory for cynicism, dismissiveness and the dead zone of the Nineties.

(11,030 posts)That's pretty much what I've come to expect from Sanders supporters. "Hillary is corrupt!" "How?" <crickets>
"The numbers aren't accurate!" "How?" <crickets>

But you people keep using that untrue stat. Actually, the popular vote is close to a tie than not.

(443 posts)But Sanders time in Congress he has co-sponsored many bills helping Vets out. I guess some of you consider that nothing but I personal feel it was a lot but I might be bias because I am a Vet so I probably just want free stuff right? You think Vets are nothing and someone who has passed many bills to help us have done nothing.

(2,193 posts)Pushing 60, I've watched as we've lost more and more integrity in our voting and campaign system (as well as every in every other sector of our culture).
The best we can hope for with a Clinton presidency is a less rapid decline than with a Trump presidency, which means a decline nonetheless.
No, more decline means that TPTB will become stronger, the rest of us weaker, and no substantive changes will come in the way nominees are selected.
I can imagine in four or eight years there will just be a cable media event and the nominees will be presented in a faux reality TV show format like "the Apprentice" or, "the Real World".
And, apparently, that's what we deserve. Snooki, 2020!

All Democrats want to end Citizen's United. This is the only way. Losing with principles is only a good thing in movies.

(8,175 posts)No they don't. I've already seen at least one poster here (a Hill supporter) who is in favor of Citizen's United.
The wealthy don't think like the rest of them. They know it works in their favor, so they are OK with it.

(50,254 posts)That a major part of her victory involved falsely accusing her opponent and his supporters of not caring about racism, sexism, and homophobia(when there was never any reason to make such accusations)?
I'll grant that HRC is competent. That she's capable of being president.
But at this point, she represents the existing order, and there is no reason for any Democrat to do that.
I'll campaign for her...but she never had to run by fighting to stop the Sanders movement.

(50,254 posts)Just nominating a woman, by itself, isn't anything.
How much did it mean, for example, when Mondale nominated Geraldine Ferraro? The same Geraldine Ferraro who had just tried to remove the endorsement of the ERA from the platform?

(4,311 posts)Being the furthest-left Democrat running in a primary is not a point in the candidate's favor, to me and to lots of other voters. I oppose the Republicans by every meaningful measure. But I am not far-left.
I'm a moderate Democrat, and I am thrilled with this result. I am also not a billionaire, just in case that was in any doubt.

Hillary pushes and pushes and gets back up when she slips and loses ground.
She busts her ass, always has. That's why I support her. That's why she succeeds.

(50,130 posts)She makes uncountable reckless mistakes. She attracts drama because of her own bad decisions. And then she drags the American people through all the trauma. She allows herself to be a punching bag because of her own failures.
She's always flailing, yes. But that is the mark of someone without integrity, principles and ethics who keeps getting caught and tries to turn that into a sympathy vote.

(50,254 posts)Every conflict we're in in the Middle East is war for war's sake. We should only fight to defend our own territory.
And if you see a very moderate social democrat as a "socialist lunatic", you couldn't be progressive on much of anything.
