The media usually does pick someone they like and want to win, yes, but no party, candidate has the power to control mainstream media. Now Cheney did have some power AFTER BushCo was selected because he had some scary connections and he was a scary guy and Faux News always helps along the Republican candidate. LBJ also had a lot of power because he also scared the crap out of everyone but that was back in the old days.

It is true that there is favoritism - how you get that is sometimes the candidates likeability to them. Or, if the the other candidates scare the hell out of them that would also help.
