Giuliani Claims Obama Response To Hurricane Sandy ‘Worse Than Katrina’

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani isn’t exactly famous for his tact, but he kicked his penchant for overstatement into overdrive this Sunday, twice falsely claiming that the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) response to Hurricane Sandy was worse than its botched response to Hurricane Katrina under President George W. Bush.

Speaking at a Romney campaign office in Florida, Giuliani said “[Obama] right now is doing a terrible job of disaster relief in my city, but no one is talking about it…People don’t have water, they don’t have food, electricity and his FEMA is no where to be found. This is a worse response than Katrina.” He also levelled the charge during a Fox News appearance, telling host Neil Cavuto that the notion FEMA was doing a good job was a “joke:”

I think maybe because there’s an election going on, people don’t want to say that, but I think FEMA has dropped the ball, certainly as big they did with Katrina, maybe bigger because they had more warning here and the situation isn’t as big as Katrina.

the notion that Generalissimo Giuliani knows what he's talking about is pure unadulterated bull. Sandy victims are getting food, water and electricity. Legions of volunteers are donating goods, driving out to the affected areas and helping any way they can. My City Councilperson is one of the local politicans organizing neighborhood efforts to collect and distibute supplies. I'm sure there are others. FEMA is there, the Red Cross is there, ConEd is working on the electricity. Board of Elections is relocating polling stations where necessary so people can still vote tomorrow. Unfortunately, this all takes time and that gives blowhards like Rudy space to bloviate about their version of facts. That's why he's on Faux News, which specializes in alternate reality.

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2012/10/mayor-bloomberg-update-on-hurricane-sandy-storm-prep-dont-be-complacent-nyc

“President Obama asked Craig Fugate from FEMA to call me earlier in the day and offer any help. I assured him that we had, we think, everything under control but we appreciate the effort. What FEMA really can do is to help those parts of the country that don’t have all of the extensive facilities and agencies and practice that New York City does. But I did want to thank them for their offer.

Now Bloomberg expects FEMA to C H Ass. He was more obsessed with the marathon than what actually was going on. Things take time.

I think it was five days. Are people already getting back in their homes in NYC? Yes. Staten Island and Jersey are different stories but it isn't because FEMA isn't doing their jobs, it's because their homes were destroyed. There is no where to go. I bet if you ask people on the ground, the victims, they'd tell you there is no comparison.

When people lose their services & homes to natural disasters, an hour wait can often seem too long.

ignored at all. Staten Island/Long Island have issues because of logistics and getting resources to people there. Staten Island has one bridge connecting to NYC in Brooklyn, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

I got an email from my cousin on Long Island in Floral Park. It sucks for her there but she understands. There are supplies but there are still gas shortages. She won't have power for maybe another week, there was a lot of damage there. The Long Island County Executive, Ed Mangango said he talked to President Obama twice and thanked him for his help.

My husband's department at Yankee Gas in CT was asked to go to NJ for two weeks. Two guys went to give extra help to the power companies down there. Since CT has almost all the power back on, workers at CL&P and Yankee Gas can now go help NYC and NJ.

If Republican measuring says that the slower you react to a natural disaster, the better, then Obama was much worse than Bush with Katrina.

By all other standards, however, Obama wins, hands down.
