'This Campaign Is Not Over': Polls Show Dead Heat in California
New poll also finds Sanders ahead of Clinton among 'potential Democratic electorate'
by Nika Knight, staff writer
June 2, 2016
The Field poll (pdf), released Thursday, found Clinton leading Sanders by a mere two pointswithin the survey's margin of error. Clinton had the support of 45 percent of the Democratic voters polled, and Sanders had 43 percent. Clinton's lead in the state has shrunk from a whopping 50 points to today's statistical tie with Sanders, as previous polls also captured.
Meanwhile, a NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll published Wednesday found Sanders beating Clinton by one point when the potential Democratic electorate was surveyed, instead of only voters registered as Democrats:
Sanders has been attracting enormous crowds at rallies throughout California in the lead-up to Tuesday's primary, sending Clinton scrambling to try to regain her once-formidable lead in the delegate-rich state.
"I read the newspapers, and they all said the campaign is over. But suddenly I just saw Hillary Clinton racing to California, Bill Clinton racing to California," Sanders said in Palo Alto on Wednesday. "Maybe they think this campaign is not over. And I agree with them. We are going to win here in California, we are going to win many of the other states up on June 7, we are going to leave California with enormous momentum going into the convention, and I believe we've got a real shot to come out of that convention with the Democratic nomination for president of the United States."
Sanders has noted the tremendous amount of support his campaign has received from young people, telling the Palo Alto crowd that he hopes they feel "enormously gratified [that] our message in this campaign, of creating a nation and a vision based on social justice, economic justice, racial justice, and environmental justice, that whether Donald Trump likes it or not, whether Hillary Clinton likes it or notthat is the future vision of this country."

(2,052 posts)It's a waste of his time. He will not win there. And I agree with the strategy. A win in California would dwarf any loss he has elsewhere.

(11,987 posts)It's a closed primary, much of it is practically a suburb of New York City which he lost badly (though NJ doesn't have the ridiculous requirement of having had to declare your party affiliation 6 months ahead of time).
To some extent, it might be a zero sum game... any delegates he might pick up by campaigning more in NJ could be offset by delegate he might lose by campaigning less in CA.
But beyond the delegate count, there's the PR of winning a state. Right now, I think he wants to try as hard as he can to win CA, and everything else is secondary. He could spend a bunch of time in NJ, maybe pick up some delegates, but would still probably lose the state... and that time away from CA would make it harder to win that one. Much better win one of the two than neither of them. So I think it's all about trying to get CA into the win column. He's got the better shot there, and it's got more delegates, besides.

(2,054 posts)The GE doesn't begin until the Democratic Party decides who it wants to run for President and Vice-President.
That's up in the air since neither Hillary nor Bernie can win the 2,383 pledged delegates they need to secure the nomination before the convention.
It will be a contested convention.

(25,471 posts)The race doesn't end when Clinton is named the presumptive nominee next week. The more-important race is just starting.

(2,052 posts)Trump would never win California. This is about optics. A loss here to a so called guy who is done would look awful.

(2,052 posts)If she is in fact blitzing CA on June 2 for the GE, in a state that should be a slam dunk in the GE, then we have more to worry about than semantics. There's no way they are doing 30 events for the GE at this juncture.

(47,209 posts)A huge part of her time now is also involved in NJ and a lot more fundraising before she goes on a blitz of swing states. Strategy!
