2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat Jane did to Burlington College is what Bernie would do to America.
It's a perfect example of #bernienomics. Come up with some grandiose plan that anyone who can add and subtract knows won't work. Promise to pay for it with fictitious income streams.
And it ends in bankruptcy.
Good thing the damage so far has been limited to a small college in Vermont. The other good example of #bernienomics in action is when Vermont tried single payer, but they at least had the good sense to give the whole thing up before it even started.
Lucky for us, Bernie's not getting anywhere near the presidency.

(115,836 posts)The spouse of a candidate did a bad thing, and we are expected to attribute (sorry, that's a big word) some sort of analogous (sorry, that's another one) behavior to the candidate. In an attempt to save Burlington College Jane Sanders (with the help of the college's board of directors and lawyers) took out a loan that ultimately the college couldn't repay. Obviously this must mean Bernie is fiscally irresponsible and will make America go broke. Bill Clinton had an illicit relationship with a naive young intern. Obviously this must mean Hillary is going to screw America. Both conclusions are stupid. See how that works?

(3,967 posts)On the other hand, while Hillary is unlikely to have a relationship with a young intern, it is not unreasonable to say she shares a professional and intellectual partnership with her spouse, and people have said the same about Bernie and his spouse. Such partnerships have pros and cons, and inferences based on them are only speculative, but that never stops anyone.

I respect a well-thought out opinion regardless of the preferred candidate. But these one-liner declaratives seem to emote from the part of the brain not bothered with passing through the frontal cortex.

Is that what this stupid OP is implying...
That somehow, Jane Sanders will have more influence on the government than Hillary Clinton did years back?
When people bring up Hillary's influence, during the Bill Clinton terms, we're told she wasn't a real factor.
Why the freakin' change?

She's incompetent.
Is she in charge of the campaign's financing?
That would explain the flood of FEC notices of illegal contributions.

(1,473 posts)She does them. They're having them looked over...for months now.
And he hires family members to run his campaign including the financing.
If she has been hired after showing her incompetence at Burlington she shouldn't of been hired in the first place will show yet more poor judgment on Bernard's part.
She has spoken for Bernie on multiple occasions and she is as fair a target as Bill Clinton is...which obviously gets your goat.

(13,877 posts)1) Jane Sanders. PhD, tries to start help a college for local young people. Financing goes awry. Pretty common for 80 percent of new ventures. Bernie decides to run for office and goes to the most qualified person to manage his campaign...Jane. Campaign Managers get paid. Donors know that.
2) Bill Clinton. Ex-lawyer, addicted to philandering, no conscience about it.
.even in the Oval Office. ..somebody let her in a number of times...routine...and it wasn't to give him a manicure. Lied out his ears and got impeached creating a Global Media Event. The CF is born. Suddenly they are rich. The entire family and some Good Friends are paid handsomely. A couple of her speeches equal the net worth of the other candidate
No, we don't want to go there with spouses, and this is why . On a scale of 1-10, Jane is maybe a 2. The other is an 11

Bernie's such a terrible candidate that instead of criticizing him on all the things that make him a terrible candidate, you'd rather drag his wife into this? I think maybe you should ask yourself what makes him so terrible because you obviously have no solid reasoning behind that opinion. I'm sure that dragging a candidates spouse into the debate would hurt Secretary Clinton much more than Senator Sanders. Of course, anytime someone brings up Bill, they get blasted.
If this is the reason you tell people to not vote for Bernie,I feel confident that you'll have about the same success rate as trying to sell Hillary on her own accomplishments, none. Instead of worrying about how Jane will somehow figure into how Bernie does while president, look around and see the damage Bill has already helped create. Weak sauce here.

(2,280 posts)Bill Clinton presided over the best economic performance in the last 50 years.
Really, should I list Secretary Clinton's political advisor and try to figure out how many ways they would destroy the country if they had their way? Clinton's great economy was completely hollow and based mostly on fraud and the unsustainable and extremely faulty tech bubble. His policies have had direct and o going effects on the current situation this country finds itself in. The whole Bill was a great president, just look at the economy while he served, argument is easily debunked by spending a day in the real world in 2016.

(646 posts)The first plan was promoted by Jane Sanders, who served as president from 2004 to 2011 and who, in her last years, championed the move from the college's diminutive headquarters in the Colodny building at the top of North Street to the capacious diocese property....
"The projections show enrollment growing approximately 20 percent per year ..." wrote the consultant, the PFM Group of Boston, "a five-year growth rate of over 100 percent," adding that revenue would grow 187 percent and expenses 148 percent. "One key assumption in the revenue growth is that it assumes one to two million dollars per year in capital campaign gifts between FY11 and FY14."
The consultant recommended that the agency approve the college's proposed financing, partly because of the "transformational nature of the project" and "the collateral value of the property being purchased." The report, however, noted these risks:
"Debt coverage requires meeting growth projections, especially enrollment growth;
"Debt coverage requires successful capital campaign without an established institutional history of philanthropy."

Free education: Bernie's proposal is only for public colleges, and California used to have free education (and still does for low income students.) College used to be very low cost:

And why can France and Germany have virtually free education, while America can't?

And if we cut our military, we might not have the power to push neoliberal policies that make it easy for US corporations to extract resources from around the world and send American jobs overseas. Now think about this carefully, do you want your children to have a life like those in socialist Denmark and Sweden or do you want them to proudly make it on their own, paying their own way, working three jobs so that they can afford to pay their fair share of taxes to support our military and corporate overlords.
