Brady Toensing, the vice chair of the Vermont Republican Party, alleged Thursday that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) Senate office pressured a bank to approve a loan to Burlington College while his wife, Jane OMeara Sanders, was its president.
A spokesman for Sanders dismissed the allegation as preposterous, politically instigated and an example of an outrageous personal attack.
Toensing, a lawyer, said he was following up on a request he made in January for a federal investigation of Sanders wife in her former role as president of Burlington College. Toensing alleged then that in applying for a loan to purchase a new campus, OMeara Sanders overstated by nearly $2 mclick to enlarge Jane Sanders - FILE
FILE Jane Sanders illion the amount of donations the college had received.
On Thursday, Toensing told a federal prosecutor he had new information.

As a matter of fact, one of the other articles about Burlington College was written by the partner of someone who works for the Sanders presidential campaign. This is also GDP instead of LBN so it does not have to meet the more stringent requirements of LBN that call for mainstream Websites.

Bernie years ago told someone in a bank to get a loan done? From a website that seems obsessed with Sanders? And the fact that the state Republican party official complained no one did anything about the state Republican Party official's prior complaint makes this news, after DU discussed it months ago?
A great property owned by the Catholic Church became available, with the Church being willing to take back paper. The board of the directors of a non-traditional college approved the acquisition. A bank loan was needed for the acquisition, which the board no doubt also approved when it approved the acquisition. No one alleges Jane pocketed any money. Jane Sanders left the college in 2011. We don't know why. Several years after Jane Sanders left the college, another college President left. We don't know why. Some time after the second departure, the college, which had all of 75 students at the time, eventually went broke in 2016, five years after Jane's departure. And, hold on to your hat, there is also an ALLEGATION that Bernie told someone in the bank to get the loan done.
HEINOUS!
This is a case for Elliot Ness for sure. And REALLY worth discussing yet again because someone who joined DU this month and posts one hit piece about Sanders after another is desperate to deflect from the Hillary email stories?
You seem to have mistaken my mocking this transparently desperate attempt by the OP to deflect as my own attempt to deflect from this hoary nothingburger. You are so very mistaken. The OP is worth derision, yes. An attempt to deflect, though?(snort) No. .

The coverage of articles relating to Bernie based on the headlines is generally positive (I did not read the "Bernie Bits" articles though). Considering that Bernie is a presidential candidate and is trying to get as much media coverage as possible the headlines do not indicate anything overly critical. There have been four articles regarding the Burlington College closing, but considering that it is an important event in Vermont it appears to be good newspaper coverage rather than a hatchet job. Just as I don't accept every word spoken by a Democrat to be be absolute gospel, I also do not dismiss allegations made by a GOP officials as being invalid because I know that people in power (such as Bernie) do exert influence to get things done, whether it is subtle or forthright. Usually the truth lies somewhere in the middle of what is being said.
This story reported that it was allegations by GOP officials so that the reader can make a determination as to its veracity. You can dismiss them entirely, while I suspect that there are elements of truth to them so we will have to see what comes from these allegations at a later date. However, disparaging the newspaper because it actually reported news isn't necessary. If anything we need more independent newspapers to report news from the local beat that are not part of the larger corporate chains such as Gannett, Tribune, etc. so that we are more informed.

(45,251 posts)including the Democratic primary, always getting votes of a healthy percentage of Republicans, as well as almost all Democrats, which I very much suspect is this Vermont state GOP official's real frustration that no one gave a crap about his ALLEGATION that, years ago, Bernie (gasp) told a bank employee to get a loan done.
Meanwhile, I hope you and that website move past this nothingburger, which would be a much healthier course.

(68,696 posts)I sure do. But I also know unless we get the House back there is 0 chance of that happening ...and Obamacare has saved thousands of lives...and will save millions eventually. This is why I was never a Bernie supporter, he is rigid in his ideology and could not work to get the best deal possible as Obama did with health care. Is it perfect hell no...it is better than what we had when Keith Olberman was running clinics and people came in with stage 4 breast cancer? Yes ...it is better. Peurto Rico...also...I don't like the deal particularly but knowing the House ...are we going to get a better deal? Can we allow the people to starve while we wait for the perfect? It can be changed later after we toss out the GOP liars in the House out onto the street...but help is needed right now.

(112,453 posts)I'm not in Vermont so I won't making any judgment calls about which source is the best. However, they apparently have some connection with VPR to post some of their content. There do seem to be some improprieties regarding the loan that Burlington College received--whether the matter is investigated or a crime was committed is an unknown. I feel sorry for the students that attended the college since their education will be disrupted and for the graduates of the college since their degrees will lose value over time.
