Related: About this forumBernie ‘Favors’ Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Opponent, Won’t Reappoint Her As DNC Chair
As the fallout continues over the recent commotion in Nevada, Bernie Sanders has virtually confirmed that his relationship with the leadership of the Democratic National Committee is about to get even more tumultuous.
CNN previewed an upcoming State of the Union interview Saturday in which the Vermont senator told Jake Tapper that he will back Tim Canovas challenge to Debbie Wasserman Schultz in the primary for Floridas 23rd district. On top of that, Sanders said that he would also effectively remove Wasserman Schultz as DNC chairwoman if he manages to become president.
I favor her opponent, Sanders said. His views are much closer to mine than is Wasserman Schultzs. Let me also say this, in all due respect to the current chairperson, if elected president, she would not be reappointed to be chair of the DNC.
Sanders comments come as tension continues to boil between his campaign and the Democratic leadership. Wasserman Schultz has been asking Sanders to apologize for and denounce the alleged mayhem at the Nevada convention, while Sanders camp has fired back that the nastiness was blown out of proportion and that the process is rigged to give Hillary Clinton the advantage over outside figures like himself.
Later in the day, Tapper tweeted out a statement he received from Wasserman Schultz in response to Sanders:

There is a video on the link, please excuse while I have a chuckle at Schultz's response.

Never do I recalled a candidate during a presidential campaign openly support the opponent of the chairwoman of his/her party, and go even further by saying he won't re-appoint her.
This guy is getting beside himself.
Try winning the nomination first.

(58,409 posts)On April 5, 2011, Vice President Joe Biden announced that Wasserman Schultz was President Barack Obama's choice to succeed Tim Kaine as the 52nd Chair of the Democratic National Committee. Until she assumed office, current DNC Vice-Chair Donna Brazile served as the interim Chair of the Democratic National Committee. Wasserman Schultz was confirmed at the meeting of the DNC held on May 4, 2011, in Washington, D.C.[46]
Wasserman Schultz got off to a controversial start as DNC Chair.[47] During an appearance on Face the Nation, Wasserman Schultz said, "The Republicans have a plan to end Medicare as we know it. What they would do is they would take the people who are younger than 55 years old today and tell them, 'You know what? You're on your own. Go and find private health insurance in the health-care insurance market. We're going to throw you to the wolves and allow insurance companies to deny you coverage and drop you for pre-existing conditions. We're going to give you X amount of dollars and you figure it out'".[48]
Four non-partisan fact-checkers called her claim false.[47] She then came under criticism for her comments on Washington Watch with Roland Martin, in which she said, "You have the Republicans, who want to literally drag us all the way back to Jim Crow laws and literallyand very transparentlyblock access to the polls to voters who are more likely to vote for Democratic candidates than Republican candidates". The next day, she stated that "Jim Crow was the wrong analogy to use".[49]
Wasserman Schultz has also been criticized for what has been termed her "frequent absences" from Congress. In 2011, she missed 62 votes of Congress, placing her 45th of 535 in missing Congressional votes. The bulk of those who missed votes did so due to family circumstances, illness, or the presidential campaign.[50] She has been criticized for her frequent appearances on MSNBC. Dylan Ratigan accused her of coming on his show and just "doing talking points". He later was forced to apologize for being "rude".[51]
In 2012, Wasserman Schultz attempted to get the DNC to pay for her clothing at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, and in 2013, to pay for her attire at the White House Correspondents Dinner.[52]
Many of Obama's advisers have questioned the move to select Wasserman Schultz as his DNC chairwoman, who they feel comes across as too partisan on television. An internal focus study of the popularity of top Obama campaign surrogates ranked Wasserman Schultz at the bottom.[53]
In February 2015, Politico, citing unnamed sources, reported that Wasserman Schultz had lined up supporters in 2013 to portray any decision by Barack Obama to replace her as DNC chair as "anti-woman and anti-Semitic".[54]

(2,571 posts)Most of the time president has influence over who the DNC chair is. Officially though the members vote on who the chair is. And I don't think it would help Sanders to have influence stating he would not reappoint the chair making it sound like he's the boss over the DNC members . In this case, Sanders as a non-Democrat until recently is not going to have the power he thinks he does. It's a moot point in any case as I don't think he's going to be the nominee or the president .
Uncle Joe
(58,409 posts)and depending on the power of his electoral win, he could have great influence literally being a transformative President for both the nation and the Democratic Party.
I believe the American People are desperately seeking a long overdue corrective transformation.
I also don't believe even as a President that Bernie Sanders would "dictate" to the members of the DNC but Schultz's poor performance and controversial actions aren't a compelling argument for her retaining the position regardless.

(39,961 posts)just how incompetently DWS has handled being the DNC chair. You know, little things like getting *more* Democrats elected not fewer. She's done a great job of failing at her primary mission - getting Dems elected.
Any Democrat that isn't wary around her given her less than stellar track record has no business in politics.

And as president, I am sure the Democrats in congress aren't going to be petulant, but try to support him. THEY want to get things done too.

Yes, tensions are boiling and it sure hasn't helped Hillary to have Debbie getting so much negative attention and calling our her favoritism.
I'm glad Bernie came right out and said he would not be helping Debbie keep her job if he had anything to do with it. That's one thing I really like about him. He isn't afraid to tell the truth on air...unlike Debbie who has learned how to doublespeak from the master herself.
thanks for the thread Uncle Joe!

Most politicians would duck a question like that, he just simply answered it and very well.
And then she responds, claiming she's "neutral". WTFever, Little Debbie! Like that ever happened for a moment in this Primary.
I hope Tim Canova kicks her right out of her seat.

No, you loanshark-feederfish, you won't be there and shouldn't be there. Your record on elections is a long string of avoidable Democratic defeats.
